Business Phone Forwarding Service: A Practical Guide to Forwarding Your Calls
A business phone forwarding service sends calls that arrive on your business number to another destination, such as a cell phone, a coworker, or an answering service. You keep the same public number your customers already know; the calls simply ring somewhere else. Forwarding is set up through your phone provider using a star code, a phone menu, or an online dashboard, and the exact steps depend on which provider and product you have. This guide explains the main types of forwarding, how to activate it on common providers using verified instructions, what to check before you turn it on, and how forwarding works together with an answering service like AllDayDesk.

What a Business Phone Forwarding Service Does
Call forwarding redirects incoming calls from your business phone number to a different destination. Callers dial the number they have always used, and the phone company routes the call to wherever you point it. Nothing about your public number changes, so you can update where calls go without reprinting cards or signs.
Forwarding is a phone-company feature, not an app you install on the phone itself. That matters because setup is done from your phone line or your provider's account portal, and the steps vary by provider and even by product within the same provider.
- Your business number stays the same; only the destination changes.
- Setup happens through your carrier, not through the answering service.
- Steps differ between wireless lines, landlines, and hosted business phone systems.
- Forwarding applies to calls, not text messages, on most wireless plans.

The Main Types of Call Forwarding
Most providers offer two broad categories. Knowing which one you need prevents the most common setup mistake: turning on the wrong kind and sending calls away when you meant to catch only missed ones.
Unconditional (all-call) forwarding sends every incoming call to the destination immediately. Your phone never rings. Conditional forwarding only redirects calls that meet a condition: no answer after a set number of rings, a busy line, or the phone being off or out of range. Conditional forwarding lets your regular line keep working while a backup catches the calls you miss.
- All-call forwarding: every call goes to the destination right away.
- No-answer forwarding: calls ring your line first, then forward if unanswered.
- Busy forwarding: calls forward while you are already on a call.
- Unreachable forwarding: calls forward when the phone is off or out of service.

How to Set Up Forwarding on Common Providers
Identify your exact service before entering any code, because the same brand often sells several phone products with different instructions. The verified steps below come from each provider's own documentation.
For Verizon mobile lines, activate all-call forwarding by dialing *72 plus the 10-digit destination from the phone itself while in Verizon coverage; dial *73 to turn it off, and use *71 plus the destination for unanswered calls. Verizon business landline service uses *72 to activate and *73 to deactivate from the same line. T-Mobile uses longer codes: **21*1 followed by the 10-digit number and # enables unconditional forwarding, **61*1 enables no-reply forwarding, **62*1 handles unreachable, and **67*1 handles busy. Prefixes of ## (for example ##21#) disable each one, and ##004# resets everything to defaults.
AT&T Phone for Business uses *72 plus the destination and # for all calls, *92 for no-answer, and *90 for busy, with *73#, *93#, and *91# to disable each. These codes apply to that product only. AT&T Collaborate is different: *72 enables always forwarding and *73 disables it, *92 plus a destination enables no-answer forwarding (*93 disables), and *62 plus a destination enables busy forwarding (*63 disables). AT&T wireless lines use yet another set, with *61, *62, and *67 for no-answer, unreachable, and busy forwarding. Spectrum Business Voice is managed online: sign in to SpectrumBusiness.net, open Voice, choose your number, then Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager, enable forwarding, and pick all calls or busy/no-answer with a destination.
Comcast Business forwarding is managed through My Account or the Comcast Business App under Voice Mobility, and features depend on which Comcast service you subscribe to. Vonage Business Communications offers Call Forwarding in its settings where you enable forwarding to a phone number, and Vonage recommends verifying with an outside test call. Frontier Digital Voice uses *72 with a second dial tone and confirmation tone, or the online portal under Settings, Call Settings, Call Forwarding. If your provider is not listed here, check your bill for the exact product name, then look up that product's own forwarding instructions. Do not borrow another carrier's codes; they may fail silently or activate the wrong feature.
- Verizon mobile: *72 + destination on, *73 off, *71 + destination for no-answer.
- T-Mobile: **21*1, **61*1, **62*1, **67*1 with destination and #; ##004# resets.
- AT&T Phone for Business: *72/*92/*90 to enable, *73/*93/*91 to disable.
- AT&T Collaborate: *72 always on, *92 no-answer on, *62 busy on; *73/*93/*63 to disable.
- Spectrum Business Voice: managed in the SpectrumBusiness.net portal.
- Comcast Business: managed through My Account or the Comcast Business App.
- Vonage Business: enable Call Forwarding to a phone number in settings, then test from outside.
- Frontier Digital Voice: *72 with confirmation tone, or the online portal.

What to Check Before You Turn Forwarding On
A few minutes of checking saves a frustrating week of missed calls. Work through this list before activating anything.
First, confirm which product you actually have. Providers like Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, Frontier, and Optimum each sell multiple phone products, and instructions written for one will not work on another. Your bill or account portal names the service.
Second, decide between all-call and conditional forwarding. If you still want your own phone to ring during business hours, choose conditional (no-answer) forwarding with a ring count that gives you time to answer. If you want the service to handle everything, use all-call forwarding.
Third, check costs. Some plans charge for forwarded calls or count them as long distance, so ask your provider how forwarding affects your bill before relying on it. Fourth, test from an outside phone after activating, and test turning forwarding off, so you know how to get back to normal. Finally, remember that forwarding and voicemail interact: all-call forwarding typically prevents calls from reaching your original line's voicemail, so decide which destination should catch what.
- Confirm the exact product name on your bill before using any instructions.
- Choose all-call versus conditional forwarding based on when you want your phone to ring.
- Ask your provider whether forwarded calls carry extra charges.
- Test activation and deactivation from an outside phone.
- Know that all-call forwarding usually overrides your original line's voicemail.

Using Forwarding with an Answering Service
Forwarding by itself only moves the call; something still has to answer it. That is where an answering service comes in. You forward your business number to the service, and it answers on your behalf using information you provide about your business, hours, services, and pricing.
AllDayDesk is an AI receptionist that answers calls around the clock using your saved business information. You keep your public number and forward calls to it; setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it found, hearing a personalized sample call, and then choosing your phone setup. The sample does not create a real booking. Once you have configured your services and availability, new appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, and an optional Google Calendar connection is available in Settings after you connect and authorize your Google account. Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings all appear in your dashboard.
A few boundaries are worth knowing. When a caller asks something AllDayDesk does not know, such as an unfamiliar price or a request to change an existing appointment, it takes a message for you instead of guessing. Changes to existing appointments are requests for you to confirm, not confirmed changes. If you want calls handed to you mid-conversation, transfers require you to configure a destination and rules in advance, and a pickup is not guaranteed. Most owners answer their own phones, so the service is designed to work whether you are a one-person operation or have a team.

- AllDayDesk answers around the clock using your saved business details.
- Setup: pick your business or website, verify details, hear a sample, choose phone setup.
- Bookings land on the built-in dashboard calendar, with optional Google Calendar in Settings.
- Unknown answers and appointment changes become messages for you to review.

How to Choose Between Forwarding Options
Use this simple decision process. If you only need calls to follow you between locations during the day, plain conditional forwarding to your cell phone is usually enough, and your provider may include it in your plan. If you miss calls regularly because you are on jobs, with clients, or closed, forwarding to an answering service keeps those calls from going to a plain voicemail box. If you want bookings captured while you work, an AI receptionist with calendar booking fits. And if you prefer a person on every call, human virtual receptionist services exist as well; their pricing and coverage vary by provider and plan, so compare current quotes rather than assuming one model always costs more or covers more hours.
Whatever you choose, keep your forwarding instructions handy, including the disable code, so you can switch destinations or turn forwarding off whenever your needs change.
- Follow-me needs during the day: conditional forwarding to your cell.
- Missed calls after hours or on jobs: forward to an answering service.
- Automatic booking while you work: AI receptionist with calendar booking.
- A person on every call: compare human virtual receptionist quotes directly.
- Always keep the disable code handy so you can revert quickly.

More questions, answered
Does call forwarding change my business phone number?
No. Callers keep dialing the same number. Your phone provider simply routes incoming calls to the destination you set, and you can change or remove that destination at any time.
Can I forward only the calls I miss instead of every call?
Usually, yes. That is conditional forwarding, which redirects calls that go unanswered, hit a busy line, or reach a phone that is off. Availability and activation steps depend on your provider and product, so confirm support for your specific line before relying on it.
Will forwarded calls cost extra?
It depends on your plan. Some providers charge for forwarded calls or treat them as long distance. Verizon notes that charges depend on the plan, so check with your provider before making forwarding a permanent part of your setup.
Can I forward my Google Voice number to an answering service?
No. Google explicitly states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported. If you use Google Voice, look at other options for handling calls on that number.
What happens to my voicemail when forwarding is on?
With all-call forwarding, calls never reach your original line, so its voicemail typically does not pick up either. With conditional forwarding, the destination usually catches the call before your voicemail would. Decide ahead of time which destination should handle missed calls.
How do I turn call forwarding off?
Most providers use a disable code from the same line, such as *73 on Verizon, AT&T Phone for Business, Frontier Digital Voice, and Optimum Business Phone, or ## codes on T-Mobile. Hosted systems like Spectrum Business Voice turn forwarding off in the same online portal where you enabled it.
