Business Phone Forwarding: How It Works and How to Set It Up
Business phone forwarding sends calls that come in on your business line to another number, such as your cell phone, so you can answer them away from the desk. Most carriers use star codes to turn forwarding on and off: a common pattern is *72 plus the destination number to forward all calls and *73 to turn it off, but the exact codes and steps depend on your carrier and the specific service you have. Forwarding comes in two main types: unconditional (every call goes to the destination) and conditional (calls only forward when the line is busy or unanswered). Forwarding itself is usually a carrier feature, and some carriers charge for it or for the minutes the forwarded call uses, so check your plan before relying on it. If you want calls answered when you cannot pick up, you can also forward to an answering service or an AI receptionist instead of a cell phone.

What Business Phone Forwarding Does
Call forwarding redirects an incoming call from your business number to a different destination. The caller dials your usual business number and never sees the change; the call simply rings somewhere else. This is how a one-person business keeps its established number while answering on a cell phone, or how an owner makes sure someone handles calls while they are on a job site.
Forwarding is a phone-line feature, not a call-handling service. It moves the call; it does not answer it, take a message, or book appointments. What happens after the ring depends on what the destination is: your cell phone, a voicemail box, or a service that answers for you.
- The caller keeps dialing your regular business number.
- Forwarding is set up on the line itself, usually by star code or an online account portal.
- It can be turned on and off whenever you want.
- It moves calls; it does not answer them or take messages.

Unconditional vs Conditional Forwarding
Unconditional forwarding (sometimes called all-call forwarding) sends every incoming call straight to the destination. Your business line does not ring at all. This is the right choice when you want the destination to handle everything, for example during hours when nobody is at the desk.
Conditional forwarding only forwards calls in specific situations: when the line is busy, when nobody answers after a set number of rings, or when the line is unreachable. Your phone still rings first, and you answer when you can. This is the typical choice for overflow coverage, so you keep answering your own calls and the destination only catches what you miss.
The codes are different for each type, and they differ between carriers and even between products from the same carrier. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination for all calls, *71 plus the destination for unanswered calls, and *73 to disable, while T-Mobile uses **21*1 plus the destination for unconditional and **61*1 for no-reply forwarding. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72 for all calls, *92 for no-answer, and *90 for busy, each with its own disable code. Always confirm the codes for your exact service with your carrier before relying on them.
- Unconditional: every call forwards immediately; the original line does not ring.
- Conditional busy: forwards only when you are already on a call.
- Conditional no-answer: rings your line first, then forwards if you do not pick up.
- Conditional unreachable: forwards when the phone is off or out of coverage.
- Codes vary by carrier and by product, so verify with your own carrier.

How to Activate Forwarding: Star Codes and Portals
The most common activation method is a star code dialed from the line itself. A typical landline pattern is to lift the handset, dial *72, wait for a second dial tone or confirmation tone, then dial the destination number. Optimum Business Phone, for example, confirms forwarding when the destination answers, and uses *73 to turn it off. Verizon's business landline guide likewise uses *72 to activate and *73 to deactivate from the same line.
Many business phone systems also manage forwarding through an online account portal instead of, or in addition to, star codes. Spectrum Business Voice, for instance, handles forwarding in its web portal, where an administrator enables forwarding, chooses all calls or busy/no-answer, and sets the destination. Vonage Business Communications lets you select Call Forwarding and forward calls to a phone number from the account settings.
Two practical notes: first, identify your exact product before following any instructions, because carriers sell several phone services with different steps. Second, always test with a real call from another phone and confirm the destination rings, then test turning forwarding off.
- Typical landline pattern: *72, wait for confirmation, dial destination; *73 disables.
- Some systems use portal settings instead of codes; administrator access may be required.
- Identify your exact service name on your bill before using any guide.
- Test activation and deactivation with a real call from another number.

Choosing a Destination: Cell Phone, Voicemail or Answering Service
Forwarding to your cell phone is the simplest option: you keep your business number and answer wherever you are. The tradeoff is that when you are busy, driving, or with a customer, the call still goes unanswered or drops to your personal voicemail, which may not mention your business hours or services.
Forwarding to an answering service or AI receptionist means the destination actually answers, takes messages, answers common questions from your saved business details, and can book appointments. AllDayDesk works this way: you keep your public number, forward calls to it, and the receptionist answers around the clock using your business information. Calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings show up in your dashboard, and new appointments go to the built-in calendar by default, with an optional Google Calendar connection available in Settings after you authorize your account.
One important limitation: if your business number is a Google Voice number, Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so that combination will not work as a forwarding destination.
- Cell destination: simple, but unanswered calls fall to your personal voicemail.
- Answering service or AI receptionist destination: calls get answered, messages taken, appointments booked.
- Google Voice numbers cannot be forwarded to automated systems, per Google's own documentation.
- When the receptionist does not know an answer, a price, or an opening, it takes a message instead of guessing.

Remote Activation and What Forwarding Costs
Remote activation lets you turn forwarding on or off from a phone other than the business line, which is useful if you forgot to forward before leaving. Support varies widely: some Comcast Business products include remote call forwarding as a feature, and portal-based systems let you change forwarding from anywhere with an account login. Star-code remote activation is not universal, so ask your carrier whether your specific service supports it and how.
On cost, forwarding is a carrier feature and pricing depends on your plan. Verizon, for example, notes that charges for mobile forwarding depend on your plan, and forwarded calls may use minutes or incur usage charges depending on the service. Check with your carrier whether the feature itself costs extra and how forwarded calls are billed.
If you forward to an answering service, that service's pricing is separate from your carrier's forwarding fees. Answering services are commonly priced per minute or per call with a monthly plan; AllDayDesk plans include a monthly minute allowance with a per-minute rate for extra time, and pricing is shown on the pricing page.
- Remote activation exists on some services but is not universal; confirm with your carrier.
- Portal-based systems let you change forwarding from any logged-in device.
- Carrier forwarding may carry feature fees or per-minute usage charges depending on your plan.
- Answering service pricing is separate from carrier forwarding charges.

Carrier-Specific Instructions
Because codes differ by carrier and even by product within one carrier, the safest path is to follow instructions written for your exact service. These guides cover the carriers business owners ask about most:
AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Spectrum, Frontier, Optimum, Vonage, T-Mobile, C Spire, Tracfone, Astound (RCN) and Windstream all document forwarding differently, and some only support it in certain areas or on certain plans. If your carrier is not listed, call its business support line and ask for the forwarding steps for your exact product, including whether conditional forwarding is supported.
- Identify the exact product name on your bill before following any guide.
- Wireless and business landline instructions from the same carrier are usually different.
- Some budget and reseller plans do not support conditional forwarding at all.
- Test with a real call, then test deactivation, before depending on forwarding.

More questions, answered
Can I keep my business number if I forward calls to my cell?
Yes. Forwarding does not change your number. Callers still dial your business number, and the call rings on your cell. If you want to move the number permanently to a cell plan instead, that is called porting, which is a different process.
Will callers know their call is being forwarded?
No. Forwarding happens on the network side. The caller dials your business number as usual and the call simply rings at the destination.
What happens if I forward to my cell and do not answer?
The call falls through to whatever your cell's voicemail is set to, which is usually your personal greeting. If you want unanswered calls handled professionally, forward to an answering service or AI receptionist instead, or use conditional no-answer forwarding so your line rings first.
Does forwarding work with texts?
Generally no. Standard call forwarding moves voice calls only. Verizon, for example, states that forwarding applies to calls, not texts. Text messages stay on the original line.
Can I forward my Google Voice number to an answering service?
No. Google's own documentation says forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported. If your business runs on Google Voice, check Google's linked-number settings or contact support about your options.
How do I turn forwarding off?
Use the disable code for your service, commonly *73 on landline systems, or turn it off in your carrier's account portal. Always confirm with a test call that calls ring on the original line again.
