AI phone answering for your business
A 24 hour receptionist answers your business phone at any time of day, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Instead of callers reaching voicemail when you are busy, closed, or on another line, a receptionist service picks up, answers common questions using information you provide, takes messages, and can book appointments. This page explains what around-the-clock coverage actually involves, how it connects to your existing phone number, what to look for when comparing options, and how AllDayDesk sets it up. AllDayDesk is an automated receptionist that answers calls around the clock using your saved business details. You keep your current public number by forwarding calls to the service, and every call, transcript, summary, and booking shows up in your dashboard.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
The job is simple to describe: when a call comes in, the receptionist answers in your business name, uses the details you saved about your services and hours, and handles the call from there. That can mean answering a question, taking a detailed message, or booking an appointment. Around-the-clock coverage means this happens whether the call arrives at 2 p.m. or 2 a.m.
With AllDayDesk, the receptionist is automated. It draws on the business information you provide during setup, so the answers callers hear reflect your actual services and policies. When the receptionist does not know an answer, a price, or an available appointment time, it takes a message instead of guessing. Messages, call transcripts, and summaries all appear in your dashboard so you can follow up.
It helps to be clear about scope. A phone receptionist service handles calls. An in-house receptionist, by contrast, also greets visitors and handles other office tasks, so the two are not full replacements for each other. Knowing that difference up front keeps expectations honest.

You do not need a new phone number. You keep your public business number and forward calls to the receptionist service. The forwarding instructions depend on your phone carrier or phone system, so setup starts by choosing how your phone service works.
Some carriers use simple star codes. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination number for all-call forwarding and *73 to turn it off, while T-Mobile uses **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding. Other providers manage forwarding through a web portal instead, such as Spectrum Business Voice, where you sign in and set forwarding in Voice Settings. The exact steps vary by product, so it is worth confirming which service you have before entering any code.
AllDayDesk walks you through this during setup: you choose your business or enter its website, check the details it found, hear a personalized sample of your receptionist, and then pick your phone setup option. The sample is a preview only and does not create a real booking.

Once you have configured your services and availability, new appointments are booked into the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default. If you prefer, you can connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account. That connection is optional; the dashboard calendar works on its own.
Changes to existing appointments work differently. The receptionist treats those as requests for you to review, not confirmed changes. You stay in control of your schedule and handle reschedules and cancellations yourself from the dashboard.
Transfers to you or another destination are also supported, but you configure the destination and the rules for when transfers happen. A transfer is not guaranteed to be picked up or answered immediately, so it works best alongside the message-taking behavior rather than as a promise of instant reachability.
A 24 hour receptionist can be a human answering service or an automated one, and both approaches exist in the market. Human services such as Ruby, AnswerConnect, and Smith.ai's live receptionist plans offer people answering your lines, with pricing that varies by plan, included allowance, and contract terms. Ruby's page, for example, advertises plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026, but the starting price alone does not tell you the full cost; you need the included minutes or calls, overage rates, and contract details from a current quote.
Automated receptionists like AllDayDesk answer calls using saved business information instead of people. This comparison covers documented features from each provider's own materials, not hands-on testing, and AllDayDesk is this site's own product. When weighing options, look past the headline price and compare what actually matters for around-the-clock coverage:
Also compare scope carefully. A phone service is not a full front-desk employee; in-house reception includes greeting visitors and office work beyond the phone. Decide which parts of the role you actually need covered.

Setup with AllDayDesk starts online. You choose your business from a listing or enter its website, then check the business details the service found. Next, you hear a personalized sample of how your receptionist will sound, and finally you choose your phone setup option, which is where forwarding comes in.
Because forwarding instructions depend on your phone service, identify your exact carrier product first. A Verizon business landline uses *72 and *73, but Verizon wireless adds *71 for unanswered calls, and other products like AT&T Collaborate or Comcast Managed Voice have their own code sets. If your carrier is not listed or you are unsure which product you have, check your bill or contact the provider before activating anything.
After forwarding is active, place a test call from another phone to confirm it reaches your receptionist. From then on, check your dashboard regularly for messages, transcripts, summaries, and bookings so nothing waits unnoticed.
