AI phone answering for your business

After Hours Answering Service Law Firm

An after hours answering service for a law firm answers calls that come in when your office is closed, such as evenings, weekends and holidays. With AllDayDesk, you keep your existing firm phone number and forward calls to the service during the hours you choose. The receptionist answers using your saved firm information, takes a message when it cannot answer a legal question or confirm a fee, and lets you read the call, transcript and summary in your dashboard. Setup involves choosing your firm or entering its website, checking the details it learned, hearing a personalized sample, and then turning on phone forwarding with the instructions for your phone provider. This page focuses on after-hours coverage specifically; if you want calls answered around the clock, see the 24/7 option instead.

Set up your business receptionist

01

Add your business

Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.

02

Hear your receptionist

Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.

03

Connect your phone

Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.

Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.

What an after hours service does for a law firm

When your office closes, callers still dial your main number. Some are potential clients with a new matter, some are existing clients with a question, and some are courts, opposing counsel or vendors. An after hours answering service answers those calls so the caller reaches a voice instead of an unanswered ring or a plain voicemail box.

AllDayDesk answers using the business information you save, so the receptionist speaks about your firm the way you would. When a caller asks something the service does not know, such as a fee amount or advice on a specific legal matter, it takes a message instead of guessing. You can read every call, transcript, summary and any booking in your dashboard, so nothing depends on a caller leaving a detailed voicemail.

This page covers coverage outside office hours only. If you want the same coverage during the day and overnight, every day, the 24/7 answering service page describes continuous availability.

  • Answers calls during the hours you choose to forward, such as evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Uses your saved firm details to describe your practice areas and office
  • Takes a message when an answer, price or appointment is unknown
  • Shows calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings in your dashboard
  • Keeps your existing public phone number through call forwarding

How setup works

Setup starts by choosing your firm or entering its website. AllDayDesk checks the details it learned about your practice, and you can correct anything before going further. You then hear a personalized sample so you know how the receptionist will sound with your information. The sample is a demonstration only; it does not create a real booking.

Next you choose phone setup. Most owners answer their own phones, so the instructions are written for forwarding your own line rather than routing through office staff. You keep your public number; callers dial it as always, and your phone service sends after-hours calls to AllDayDesk.

Forwarding instructions depend on your phone provider, so check which service you actually have before entering any code. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination for all-call forwarding and *71 for unanswered calls, while Verizon business landline uses *72 for all-call forwarding. T-Mobile uses **61*1 plus the destination for no-reply forwarding. Optimum Business Phone uses *72 and *73 to turn forwarding on and off. These codes differ by product and carrier, so use the guide for your exact service.

  • Choose your business or enter its website so details can be checked
  • Hear a personalized sample before you commit
  • Pick phone setup and follow the forwarding steps for your provider
  • Verify forwarding with a real call from another phone

Choosing what to forward

You have two broad choices for after-hours coverage. Unconditional forwarding sends every call to the service whenever it is turned on, which fits firms that want the line handled entirely outside office hours. Conditional forwarding sends calls only when the line is busy or unanswered, which lets your own voicemail catch calls first and the service catch the rest.

Not every phone service supports conditional forwarding, and the codes for it are not the same as all-call forwarding codes. If your provider's guide does not confirm a conditional option for your exact product, use all-call forwarding during closed hours and turn it off when you reopen, or ask the provider what your plan supports. Google Voice is a special case: Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so a Google Voice number is not a workable path to AllDayDesk.

Whichever method you pick, test it from an outside phone after activating, and confirm you know how to turn forwarding off, such as *73 on many landline services.

  • Unconditional forwarding: all calls go to the service while active
  • Conditional forwarding: only busy or unanswered calls go to the service, where supported
  • Confirm the exact product name on your bill before using any code
  • Google Voice numbers cannot be forwarded to an automated system

What happens on after-hours calls

During a call, the receptionist greets the caller with your firm's information, answers general questions such as location or practice areas from what you saved, and collects the caller's reason for calling and contact details. If a caller asks for a price, a legal opinion, or an appointment when the answer is not known, the receptionist takes a message for you instead of making something up.

New appointments use the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. If you prefer, you can connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account; that connection is optional and is the supported external calendar.

Changes to existing appointments are requests for you to handle, not confirmed changes, so you stay in control of your schedule. Transfers to you are possible, but you must configure a destination and rules first, and pickup or an immediate response is not guaranteed. After any call, you can read the transcript and summary in your dashboard the next time you check in.

  • Messages are taken whenever an answer, price or appointment is unknown
  • Bookings land in the dashboard calendar by default, or optional Google Calendar after you connect it
  • Existing appointment changes are requests, not automatic changes
  • Transfers need a configured destination and rules, with no guaranteed pickup

Deciding whether after-hours coverage is worth it

A practical way to decide is to look at when your firm actually receives calls. If most callers reach voicemail after 5 p.m. or on weekends and you rarely return those calls the same day, an answering service gives those callers a real conversation and gives you a written record to work from in the morning.

Compare the options honestly. A human after-hours service, such as AnswerConnect's 24/7 live answering or Ruby's live virtual receptionists, uses people to answer; Ruby advertises plans starting at $245 per month as of October 9, 2026, and Smith.ai prices its human receptionist service per call, so quotes vary with usage. An in-house receptionist covers daytime duties beyond phones, which BLS describes as including greeting visitors and office tasks, so a phone service is not a full replacement for that role. AllDayDesk is this site's own product and uses an AI receptionist; this comparison is based on documented features and published prices, not hands-on testing, and you should verify current quotes before deciding.

Cost depends on call volume either way. AllDayDesk pricing is displayed separately on the pricing section of this site, so check your expected after-hours minutes against the plan that fits.

  • Check when your missed calls actually happen before choosing coverage hours
  • Human services answer with people; AI services answer with software
  • Published starting prices are not full costs; ask about included minutes and overages
  • A phone service supplements an in-house receptionist rather than replacing one

More questions, answered

Do I have to change my firm's phone number?

No. You keep your public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk during the hours you choose. Your callers dial the same number they always have.

Can it give legal advice or quote fees after hours?

No. When an answer, price or appointment is unknown, the receptionist takes a message so you can respond yourself.

Will I know a call came in overnight?

Yes. Calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings appear in your AllDayDesk dashboard, so you can review everything when you reopen.

Does it work with Google Calendar?

Yes, optionally. New appointments use the built-in dashboard calendar by default, and you can connect Google Calendar in Settings after authorizing your account. Other calendar or scheduling software is not supported.

What if a transferred call does not reach me?

Transfers require you to configure a destination and rules, and pickup or an immediate response is not guaranteed. The service also takes ordinary messages during calls, but no outcome is promised after an unanswered transfer.

Is my Google Voice number compatible?

No. Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so you need a different phone service to use AllDayDesk.
