AI phone answering for your business

Answering Service for Contractors

An answering service for contractors answers your business phone when you are on a job site or off the clock. With AllDayDesk, callers hear a receptionist trained on your saved business details, and you keep your existing number by forwarding calls. The receptionist captures caller details, takes a message when an answer or price is unknown, and passes along appointment requests. Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings show up in your dashboard.

Why contractors use an answering service

Contractor work happens where phones are hard to answer: crawl spaces, rooftops, and job sites with no signal. A caller who reaches voicemail may simply try the next company instead of leaving a message. An answering service covers those moments by answering the line when you cannot, taking down what the caller needs, and putting it in your dashboard.

It also helps after hours. A homeowner with a burst pipe or a dead furnace may call in the evening, and a service that is available around the clock means that caller reaches a voice instead of a beep. You review the message in the morning and decide who to call back first.

AllDayDesk is built around your saved business information, so the receptionist speaks about your services the way you would. It does not guess. When a caller asks something you have not saved, like a price for a job that needs an estimate, it takes a message instead of making up an answer.

  • Calls answered when you are on site, driving, or unavailable
  • Caller name, number, and reason for calling captured on each call
  • Messages and appointment requests collected in one dashboard
  • Around-the-clock availability, including evenings and weekends
  • You keep your current business number

How AllDayDesk works for a contracting business

Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website. AllDayDesk pulls together your business details, you check that they are right, and then you hear a personalized sample of how your receptionist will sound. The sample is a demonstration only; it does not create a real booking or contact anyone.

Next you choose your phone setup. You can keep your public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk, so customers dial the same number they always have. The exact forwarding steps depend on your phone service, and our guides cover the common carriers.

Once you are live, the receptionist answers using your saved details. It captures caller information, takes messages when it cannot answer a question, and records appointment requests. You can see calls, read transcripts and summaries, and review bookings in the dashboard. New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk calendar by default, once you have set up your services and availability. If you prefer, you can connect Google Calendar in Settings after authorizing your account; other calendar or scheduling software connections are not supported.

  • Enter your business or website, check the details, hear a sample
  • Forward your existing number so customers keep dialing it
  • Receptionist uses your saved services and business information
  • Unknown answers or prices become messages, not guesses
  • Transcripts, summaries, and bookings visible in the dashboard

Keeping your number: forwarding by carrier

Forwarding is done through your phone provider, not through AllDayDesk, so the steps depend on who supplies your service. Identify your exact product first, because codes differ between a carrier's wireless, landline, and hosted business offerings.

Verified examples from provider documentation include: Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination for all calls, *71 for unanswered calls, and *73 to turn it off, set from the phone while in coverage. T-Mobile uses **21*1 plus the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, with **61*1 for no-reply and ##004# to reset. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72, destination, # for all calls and *92 for no-answer forwarding. Spectrum Business Voice manages forwarding in the online portal under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager. Optimum Business Phone uses *72 then the destination, with *73 to disable. Vonage Business Communications enables forwarding to a phone number from its Call Forwarding setting.

If your provider is not listed, check your bill for the exact service name, then look up that product's own forwarding instructions or ask the provider's support team. Google Voice is a special case: Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so a Google Voice number cannot be forwarded to AllDayDesk.

  • Verizon mobile: *72 + destination (all calls), *71 (unanswered), *73 to disable
  • T-Mobile: **21*1 + destination # (all calls), **61*1 (no reply), ##004# resets
  • AT&T Phone for Business: *72, destination, # (all calls); *92 (no answer)
  • Spectrum Business Voice: portal-based, under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager
  • Optimum Business Phone: *72 then destination; *73 disables
  • Google Voice numbers cannot be forwarded to an automated system

What the receptionist does on a contractor call

A typical call goes like this: a homeowner dials your number while you are under a sink. The receptionist greets them by your business name, asks what they need, and captures their name, callback number, and the description of the problem. If the caller wants an appointment, the receptionist can book one on your calendar using the services and availability you configured.

If the caller asks something you have not saved, such as an exact price for a custom deck or whether you service a town outside your listed area, the receptionist does not invent an answer. It takes a message so you can respond with accurate information. The same applies to changes: a request to move an existing appointment is passed to you as a request, not confirmed on the spot.

Transfers to you are also available, but you must configure a destination number and the rules for when transfers happen. Because you may be on another line or out of range, a transfer is not guaranteed to reach you, which is why message taking matters.

  • Caller details and job description captured on each call
  • Appointment requests booked using your configured services and availability
  • Unknown prices or answers become messages for you
  • Reschedule requests are relayed, not confirmed
  • Optional transfers require a configured destination and rules

Choosing between service options

Contractors generally weigh three routes: a human answering service, an in-house receptionist, or an automated service like AllDayDesk. Human services staff phones with people around the clock; published starting prices for some providers run higher per month, and details like included minutes and contracts vary by quote. An in-house receptionist handles phones plus office tasks, but covers only the hours someone is at a desk.

AllDayDesk is an automated service that answers using your saved business information, is available around the clock, and shows calls in a dashboard with transcripts and summaries. Pricing is displayed separately on this site, so compare the plan details, included minutes, and overage rates against any quote you get elsewhere.

This comparison is based on documented features from each provider's own materials, not hands-on testing. The right choice depends on your call volume, whether callers need judgment calls a person handles better, and your budget.

  • Human services: people answer, pricing varies by provider and quote
  • In-house receptionist: broader office role, limited to staffed hours
  • AllDayDesk: automated, around-the-clock availability, dashboard with transcripts
  • Compare included minutes and overage rates before deciding

More questions, answered

Do I have to change my business phone number?

No. You keep your public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk. Customers keep dialing the number they already have, and the forwarding steps depend on your phone provider.

Can the receptionist quote prices for my work?

Only for prices you have saved in your business details. For anything unknown, such as a custom job that needs an estimate, the receptionist takes a message so you can answer accurately.

Where do booked appointments go?

New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. You can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your account.

Can I use my Google Voice number?

Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so a Google Voice number cannot be forwarded to AllDayDesk. A standard business line from a phone provider works.

Will calls transfer to my cell phone?

Transfers are available once you configure a destination number and rules for when they happen. Because you might be busy or out of range, a transfer is not guaranteed to reach you, and callers can leave a message either way.

Can I hear what the receptionist sounds like before signing up?

Yes. During setup you enter your business or its website, check the details, and hear a personalized sample. The sample is a demonstration only and does not create a real booking.

Hear your contractor answering service before you commit

Enter your business or website, check the details AllDayDesk pulls together, and listen to a personalized sample of the receptionist answering for your company. If it sounds right, forward your number and let calls start reaching a voice instead of voicemail.
