AI phone answering for your business
A legal office answering service answers your firm's phone when you cannot, whether that is during a busy afternoon, after hours, or on weekends. AllDayDesk is an around-the-clock answering service built from your own business information. Callers hear a receptionist that knows your firm's name, practice areas, and consultation process. It answers common questions, takes messages, and books consultations on your calendar. You keep your existing number by forwarding calls, and calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings appear in your dashboard for review.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
Law offices get a mix of calls: new people asking whether you handle their type of case, existing clients checking on their matter, courts and other attorneys calling in, and vendors. When you are in a hearing, meeting with a client, or simply away from your desk, these calls still need a professional response.
AllDayDesk answers using the business information you save, so callers get consistent answers about your firm. When a caller asks something the service does not know, such as the status of a specific case or a fee question you have not documented, it takes a message instead of guessing. That matters in legal work, where a wrong answer can create real problems.
Setup starts by choosing your legal office or entering its website, then checking the details the service picked up, such as your firm name, practice areas, and location. You listen to a personalized sample of how your calls would be answered. The sample is a preview only and does not create a real booking.
Next you choose phone setup. AllDayDesk does not replace your number; you keep it and forward calls to the service. The forwarding steps depend on your phone provider. For example, Verizon mobile lines use *72 plus the destination number for all-call forwarding and *73 to turn it off, while T-Mobile uses **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding. Business landline and hosted systems like Spectrum Business Voice or Comcast Business Voice manage forwarding through their online portals instead of star codes. Check the guide for your specific carrier, because the exact service on your bill determines which steps apply.
Once forwarding is active, calls that would have rung your desk ring the AllDayDesk receptionist instead. You can turn forwarding off at any time with the same controls.

New consultations are booked on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. If you prefer, you can connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account. AllDayDesk does not connect to other scheduling systems or industry software.
Changes to existing appointments work differently. If a caller wants to move or cancel an appointment that is already on the books, the service records the request for you to confirm. It does not confirm changes on its own, which protects your schedule from accidental cancellations.
When a caller asks a question the service cannot answer from your saved information, such as a fee amount you have not documented or the status of a filed matter, it takes a message. You see the message, transcript, and summary in your dashboard and can return the call when you choose.
Sometimes a caller should reach you directly, such as an existing client with an urgent matter or another attorney on a referral. AllDayDesk can transfer calls to a number you choose, but you must configure the transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen.
Two honest limits to know about. First, a transfer is not guaranteed to be picked up or answered immediately; if you are unavailable, the caller may not reach you at that moment. Second, when a caller's question or request is unknown, the service takes a message rather than improvising an answer. For a law practice, that conservative approach is usually what you want.
You have two broad options for covering your firm's phone. Human virtual receptionist services, such as Ruby, AnswerConnect, and Smith.ai's live receptionist service, staff calls with trained people. Ruby advertises plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026, and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing; actual costs depend on the plan, included allowance, and contract terms, so request current quotes. Human services can handle judgment-heavy conversations but generally cost more and may have coverage limits depending on the plan.
AllDayDesk is an AI receptionist, which is this site's own product. It answers around the clock using your saved firm information, books consultations, and takes messages. Smith.ai also sells a separate AI receptionist product, which is a different company's feature. When comparing, look at what each service actually documents: coverage hours, how messages reach you, booking capabilities, and total monthly cost including overage rates. This comparison is based on published feature information, not hands-on testing of any service.

If no one on your team is dedicated to the phone, calls can go unanswered while you are in a hearing or meeting with a client. An answering service fills that gap without hiring. Larger offices sometimes use one to cover lunch hours, overflow during trial prep, or evenings and weekends.
It is not a full replacement for office staff. An in-house receptionist greets visitors, handles mail, and does office tasks beyond the phone, so think of an answering service as phone coverage, not a whole employee. It also will not give legal advice, verify insurance, or handle emergencies; it answers, informs, books, and takes messages.
