AI phone answering for your business

Phone Answering Service for Lawyers

A phone answering service for lawyers answers your firm's calls when you are in court, with a client, or simply busy, around the clock. AllDayDesk answers using the business information you save, takes messages when it cannot answer a question, and can book consultations on a built-in calendar once you set your services and availability. You keep your existing firm number by forwarding calls, and the exact steps depend on your phone provider. Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings appear in your dashboard.

How a phone answering service works for a law practice

AllDayDesk answers business calls around the clock using the information you save about your firm, such as your practice areas, office hours, and how you describe your services. When a caller asks something AllDayDesk cannot answer, like a legal question or a fee amount you have not listed, it takes a message instead of guessing.

You do not need a new phone number. You keep your firm's public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk. The forwarding instructions depend on your phone service, so check which provider and product you have before you start.

Setup has four steps: choose your business or enter its website, check the details AllDayDesk found, hear a personalized sample call, and choose your phone setup. The sample is a preview of how your receptionist sounds and creates no real booking. After that, calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings appear in your dashboard.

  • Answers calls around the clock using your saved firm information
  • Takes a message when an answer, price, or appointment time is unknown
  • Books new consultations on the built-in dashboard calendar once services and availability are configured
  • Shows calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings in your dashboard

Keeping your firm's number: forwarding by provider

Forwarding is the only technical step, and it depends on your carrier. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination for all-call forwarding and *71 for unanswered calls, while T-Mobile uses **21*1 plus the destination for unconditional forwarding and **61*1 for no-reply calls. Comcast Business manages forwarding through My Account or the Comcast Business App, and Spectrum Business Voice is configured in the online portal under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager.

One important limit: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so firms on Google Voice need a different path for their main line.

Identify your exact service first, because codes differ even within one carrier's product lineup. Our provider guides list verified steps for the most common services.

  • Verizon mobile: *72 plus destination for all calls, *71 for unanswered, *73 to disable
  • T-Mobile: **21*1 plus destination for unconditional, **61*1 for no reply, ##004# to reset
  • Comcast Business and Spectrum Business Voice: managed in the provider's online portal
  • Google Voice numbers cannot be forwarded to an automated answering system

What callers experience

A caller reaches a receptionist that knows your firm's name, practice areas, and how you describe your services. It can answer questions covered by your saved information and book a consultation on your calendar if you have configured your services and availability.

When a caller asks something outside what you saved, such as the strength of their case, a fee not in your information, or whether you can take their matter, AllDayDesk takes a message rather than guessing. You see the message, transcript, and summary in your dashboard and decide how to respond.

If a caller wants to change an existing appointment, that change is passed to you as a request. You confirm or adjust it yourself, so your calendar always reflects decisions you made.

  • Answers general questions using your saved firm details
  • Books new consultations once services and availability are set up
  • Takes a message instead of guessing at legal questions or unknown prices
  • Passes appointment change requests to you rather than confirming them
  • How consultation booking works on the dashboard calendar and the optional Google Calendar connection. AI appointment booking

Calendars and scheduling

New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default. Before bookings can happen, you configure your services and availability so the receptionist knows what can be scheduled and when.

If you prefer to work in Google Calendar, AllDayDesk supports an optional connection. In Settings, you connect and authorize your Google account, and appointments then appear where you already work. This connection is optional and set up by you; it is not automatic.

Changes to existing appointments are always requests for you to review, not confirmed changes, whichever calendar you use.

  • Built-in dashboard calendar is the default for new appointments
  • Services and availability must be configured before booking works
  • Optional Google Calendar connection is authorized by you in Settings
  • Existing appointment changes arrive as requests, not confirmed edits

Transferring urgent calls to you

Sometimes a caller should reach you directly, such as an existing client with a court date tomorrow. AllDayDesk can transfer calls to a destination you choose, but you must configure the transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen.

Transfers depend on the phone network, so neither that the caller is picked up on the other end nor an immediate response is guaranteed. The call record appears in your dashboard, so you can follow up on anything that came in while you were unavailable.

  • You configure the transfer destination and the rules for when transfers occur
  • Pickup and immediate response on a transfer are not guaranteed
  • Calls still appear in your dashboard with a transcript and summary

Comparing AI and human answering services for lawyers

Human legal answering services exist and can be a good fit. Ruby offers live virtual receptionist plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026, and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionist service. Those starting prices are not complete comparisons; included allowance, overage rates, hours, and contract terms all vary by quote.

AllDayDesk is this site's own product, and this comparison covers documented features rather than hands-on testing. The main differences to weigh are cost structure, how the service handles questions outside your saved information, and how appointments get on your calendar.

An in-house receptionist does more than answer phones, including greeting visitors and handling office tasks, so a phone service is not a full replacement for that role.

  • Ruby: human virtual receptionists, plans starting at $245 per month (October 2026)
  • Smith.ai: human receptionists with per-call pricing that varies by needs
  • AllDayDesk: AI receptionist answering around the clock with dashboard-based pricing shown separately
  • In-house reception covers in-person and office duties beyond phone answering

More questions, answered

Do I have to change my firm's phone number?

No. You keep your public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk. The forwarding steps depend on your phone provider, and our provider guides cover the most common services.

Can it answer legal questions from callers?

It answers questions covered by the information you save about your firm. When a caller asks something unknown, such as advice on their matter or a fee you have not listed, it takes a message instead.

Where do booked consultations appear?

New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. An optional Google Calendar connection can be authorized in Settings.

Can I use my Google Voice number?

Google does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice main line is not a supported forwarding path. Firms on Google Voice need a different number or provider for the line they forward.

How do I know what was said on each call?

Calls appear in your dashboard with a transcript and a summary, along with any messages or bookings from the call.

Is there a sample call before I commit?

Yes. During setup you hear a personalized sample based on your firm's details. The sample creates no real booking.

Hear your firm's receptionist before you decide

Enter your firm's website, check the details, and listen to a personalized sample call. If it sounds right, forward your existing number and AllDayDesk starts answering around the clock.
