Business Phone Forward to Cell: How It Works and What to Decide First
Forwarding a business phone to a cell means incoming calls to your business number ring on your mobile phone instead of (or before) your desk phone. There are two main types: all-call forwarding, which sends every call straight to your cell, and conditional forwarding, which only sends calls when you are busy, do not answer, or your phone is off. Most carriers let you turn forwarding on with a short code or through an online account. Before you set it up, check which service you actually have (wireless, landline, or a hosted business phone product), because the codes and steps differ. Forwarding affects calls only, not texts, and while calls are forwarded your desk line may not ring at all. If you want calls handled when you cannot pick up, a forwarding setup can also point to an answering service or an AI receptionist like AllDayDesk, which answers using your saved business information and takes messages or books appointments in a dashboard you can review.

What forwarding a business phone to a cell actually does
When your business line forwards to a cell, the caller dials your normal business number, and the phone company reroutes that call to your mobile. The caller usually does not know anything changed. Your business number stays the same on your website, invoices, and listings.
Forwarding applies to calls only. Text messages sent to a forwarded line are not forwarded with it, so if customers text your business number, plan separately for those. Also note that when all-call forwarding is active, the original line typically stops ringing entirely, so a shared office phone will not pick up first.
- Callers keep dialing your regular business number.
- Calls only are forwarded, not texts.
- With all-call forwarding, the original desk line usually does not ring.
- You can usually turn forwarding on and off yourself with a code or an account setting.

All-call vs. conditional forwarding
All-call (unconditional) forwarding sends every incoming call to your cell immediately. Use it when you are closing the office, working remotely, or want your cell to be the only phone that rings.
Conditional forwarding only reroutes calls in specific situations: when your line is busy, when nobody answers after a set number of rings, or when the phone is unreachable (off or out of service). This is useful when you want the desk phone to answer first during business hours but your cell to catch anything that slips through. Not every service supports every conditional option, so confirm with your provider which ones your plan includes.
- Unconditional: every call goes to the cell right away.
- Busy: forwards only while you are already on a call.
- No answer: forwards after the phone rings unanswered.
- Unreachable: forwards when the phone is off or out of coverage.

How major providers handle it
The exact steps depend on which product you have, not just the brand. A carrier's wireless service, landline service, and hosted business phone products often use different codes or portals. Identify the exact service name on your bill first, then use that product's own instructions.
Examples from published provider guides: Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the 10-digit destination for all calls, *71 for unanswered calls, and *73 to turn forwarding off, set from the mobile phone itself. T-Mobile uses **21*1 plus the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, with ##21# to disable. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72, destination, # for all calls, *92 for no answer, and *90 for busy. Comcast Business Managed Voice and Optimum Business Phone also use *72 to activate and *73 to deactivate, while Spectrum Business Voice manages forwarding through the online account instead of star codes. Vonage Business Communications handles it in the account settings by choosing Call Forwarding and entering a destination number.
- Verizon mobile: *72 + destination (all calls), *71 (unanswered), *73 to disable.
- T-Mobile: **21*1 + destination + # (all calls), ##21# to disable.
- AT&T Phone for Business: *72, destination, # (all calls); *92 no answer; *90 busy.
- Spectrum Business Voice: set forwarding in the online portal under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager.
- Vonage Business Communications: enable Call Forwarding to a phone number in account settings.

A note on Google Voice
If your business runs on Google Voice, be aware that Google explicitly states forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported. That means a Google Voice number is not a reliable way to route calls into an automated answering service. Google Voice can forward calls to linked regular phone numbers, so check Google's own documentation for what your setup supports before relying on it.

Decisions to make before you switch forwarding on
Forwarding is simple to turn on, but a few choices determine whether it actually helps your business. Work through these before dialing any codes.
First, decide all-call or conditional. If you want your cell to be the primary business phone, use all-call. If you want the desk phone to keep working and only catch overflow, use conditional. Second, think about who answers. If you are on a job, driving, or with a customer, a forwarded call still goes to voicemail when you cannot pick up, and callers may hang up without leaving a message. Third, consider what happens to messages: voicemail on a cell is easy to forget, and there is no summary or transcript unless you use a service that provides one.
- Pick all-call vs. conditional based on whether the desk phone should still ring.
- Confirm your plan supports the forwarding type you want before relying on it.
- Decide how missed calls get handled, since forwarded calls can still go unanswered.
- Test the setup with a real call from another phone after activating.

Forwarding to a cell vs. forwarding to an answering service
Forwarding to your cell keeps calls personal, but it ties your availability to your own schedule. An answering service or AI receptionist is another forwarding destination: calls route there when you cannot answer, and the service handles the conversation using information you provide.
With AllDayDesk, you keep your existing business number and forward calls to the service. It answers around the clock using your saved business details, takes messages when it does not know an answer or price, and can book new appointments once you have set up your services and availability in the built-in dashboard calendar. An optional Google Calendar connection is available in Settings after you connect and authorize your account. Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings show up in your dashboard so you can follow up on your own time. Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests rather than confirmed changes, and call transfers to you require you to configure a destination and rules.
- Cell forwarding: calls reach you directly, but only when you can pick up.
- Answering service: calls get handled even when you are unavailable.
- AllDayDesk answers using your business information and logs everything in a dashboard.
- New bookings go to the dashboard calendar by default; Google Calendar is an optional connection in Settings.

More questions, answered
Does forwarding my business number to a cell cost extra?
It depends on your carrier and plan. Some providers note that charges depend on the plan, and forwarded calls may be treated as outgoing calls on some services. Check with your provider before leaving forwarding on permanently.
Will my texts forward to my cell too?
No. Call forwarding covers calls only. Texts sent to a forwarded business line are not forwarded, so handle texting separately.
Can I forward only when I do not answer?
Many services support no-answer (conditional) forwarding, but support varies by product and plan. Identify your exact service and confirm with your provider which conditions it supports before relying on it.
How do I turn forwarding off?
Most star-code services use *73 from the same line to deactivate, and portal-based services let you disable forwarding in the same settings where you enabled it. Check your provider's guide for your specific product.
Can I forward a Google Voice number to an automated answering service?
Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so this is not a dependable path. Review Google's documentation for what your setup allows.
