How to Forward My Business Phone to My Cell

To forward your business phone to your cell, you pick a forwarding type, activate it with your phone provider (usually a star code, a web dashboard, or both), and confirm it works with a test call. Most providers use *72 plus your cell number for all-call forwarding and *73 to turn it off, but the exact steps depend on your carrier and product, so check your provider's own guide first. There are two main approaches: unconditional forwarding sends every call straight to your cell, while conditional forwarding only sends calls that go unanswered, get a busy signal, or reach a line that is off. Before you start, confirm which service you actually have (wireless, landline, or hosted business voice), because the codes differ between them.

Know the Two Types of Forwarding

Unconditional (all-call) forwarding sends every incoming call to your cell immediately. Your business line never rings, and on many landline services forwarding also overrides voicemail on the original line.

Conditional forwarding only diverts calls under certain conditions: when you do not answer after a set number of rings, when the line is busy, or when the phone is unreachable. This lets your business line ring first and your cell act as the backup.

Pick all-call forwarding when you want your cell to be the only place calls reach. Pick conditional forwarding when you want the business line to ring normally first and only overflow to your cell.

  • All-call: every call goes straight to your cell; nothing rings at the original line.
  • No-answer: the business line rings first, then the call moves to your cell.
  • Busy: calls divert while the line is already on another call.
  • Unreachable: calls divert when the phone is off or out of service.

Common Activation Steps by Provider

The fastest way to forward your business phone to your cell is usually a star code dialed from the line itself, though many hosted and app-based services use a web dashboard instead. Always confirm the exact product name on your bill before using any code, because the same carrier can use different codes for wireless, landline, and hosted voice products.

Verified examples from provider documentation:

  • Verizon mobile: dial *72 plus the 10-digit cell number to forward all calls; *71 plus the number for unanswered calls; *73 disables. Activate from the mobile phone while in Verizon coverage.
  • Verizon business landline: dial *72 and follow the activation prompts; *73 deactivates from the same line.
  • AT&T Phone for Business: all calls *72, destination, #; no answer *92, destination, #; busy *90, destination, #. Turn each off with *73#, *93#, or *91#. AT&T Collaborate uses different codes (*72 always, *92 no-answer, *62 busy) and an administrator controls feature access.
  • Comcast Business: Voice Mobility includes call forwarding and remote call forwarding, managed through My Account or the Comcast Business App. For the Managed Voice Panasonic TPA65 system, lift the handset, dial *72 and the destination; *92 sets no-answer and *90 sets busy.
  • Spectrum Business Voice: sign in to SpectrumBusiness.net, open Voice, choose the number, then Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager, enable forwarding, and pick all calls or busy/no-answer with your destination.
  • Optimum Business Phone: dial *72, wait for dial tone, dial the destination; destination answering confirms. *73 turns it off. My Optimum Voice also manages forwarding. Frontier Unlimited Digital Voice: lift the handset, dial *72, wait for the second dial tone, enter the destination, and listen for confirmation.
  • Vonage Business Communications: select Call Forwarding and enable Forward Calls to a phone number, then verify with an outside call. T-Mobile: **21*1 followed by the number and # enables unconditional forwarding; **61*1 for no reply, **62*1 for unreachable, **67*1 for busy; ##004# resets to defaults.
  • C Spire: dial *72 and the 10-digit destination, press Call; *73 disables; conditional codes are not published, so confirm with C Spire directly. Windstream OfficeSuite UC: use the WE Connect Dashboard, My Call Forwarding widget, and choose Immediate or a ring count for unanswered calls.

What to Check Before You Forward

A few minutes of checking prevents a week of missed calls. Start with the product name, then the destination, then a real test.

  • Identify your exact service on your bill: wireless, landline, or hosted voice. Codes differ between them even from the same carrier.
  • Confirm your plan supports the forwarding type you want; some carriers offer conditional features only on select plans or areas.
  • Check whether forwarding affects your existing voicemail. All-call forwarding on some landlines stops the original line's voicemail from picking up.
  • Note that wireless forwarding moves calls, not texts.
  • Ask your provider whether forwarding charges apply to your plan.
  • After activating, place a real test call from another phone and confirm it reaches your cell the way you expect.
  • Write down the disable code so you can turn forwarding off quickly.

A Note on Google Voice Numbers

If your business number is a Google Voice number, the situation is different. Google Voice can forward calls to linked phone numbers, but Google explicitly states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported. That means a Voice number cannot be pointed at an automated answering service. Conditional forwarding codes also vary by the underlying cell carrier, and some reseller plans do not support them.

When Forwarding to Your Cell Is Not Enough

Forwarding to your cell works well when you can answer, but it has limits. If you are on another call, driving, or asleep, the call still goes to your personal voicemail, and the caller has no idea when you will call back. There is also no record of what was said or requested.

An answering service takes a different approach: calls are answered in your business name, messages and transcripts are collected, and appointment requests can be handled against your availability. AllDayDesk answers calls around the clock using your saved business information. You keep your existing number by forwarding calls to it, using the same carrier steps described above. Setup involves choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it found, hearing a personalized sample, and choosing your phone setup. The sample call is a demonstration and creates no real booking.

In the AllDayDesk dashboard you can see calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings. New appointments go on the built-in dashboard calendar once you have configured your services and availability, and an optional Google Calendar connection is available in Settings after you connect and authorize your account. Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests rather than confirmed changes. When the service does not know an answer, a price, or an opening, it takes a message. If you want certain callers to reach you directly, you can configure call transfers to a destination you choose with your own rules, though pickup is not guaranteed.

More questions, answered

Can I forward my business line to my cell without buying a new number?

Yes. Forwarding keeps your existing business number; callers dial it as usual and the carrier diverts the call to your cell. You do not need a new or separate forwarding number.

Will callers know my calls are being forwarded?

No. Forwarding happens at the network level, so callers dial your business number and hear a normal ring. The diversion is invisible to them.

Does forwarding also forward text messages?

No. On wireless service, forwarding applies to calls only, not texts.

How do I turn forwarding off?

Most providers use *73 dialed from the same line to disable all-call forwarding, and matching disable codes for conditional types. Hosted services let you turn forwarding off in the same web portal where you turned it on.

Can I forward only after-hours calls to my cell?

Standard carrier forwarding does not include a schedule. If you want calls handled after hours without ringing your cell, an answering service that answers around the clock is the usual alternative.
