AI phone answering for your business
A 24 7 receptionist answers your business phone at any hour, day or night, so callers reach a helpful voice instead of voicemail. With AllDayDesk, the receptionist is an AI assistant that answers calls around the clock using your saved business information. You keep your existing phone number by forwarding calls to the service, and setup involves choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it found, hearing a personalized sample, and choosing how to connect your phone. Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings show up in your dashboard. Around-the-clock availability describes when the service can answer; it is not a promise that every single call connects, and transfers to you depend on a destination and rules you configure.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
A 24 7 receptionist handles your business phone outside the hours you personally answer. Instead of a caller hearing a ringing phone or a generic voicemail box, someone (or something) picks up, greets the caller, answers basic questions, and takes down what the caller needs.
With AllDayDesk, the receptionist is an AI assistant built around your business. It answers using the business information you save, so a caller asking about your services or location gets answers based on your details rather than a script written for someone else. When the assistant does not know an answer, a price, or an available appointment, it takes a message so you can follow up yourself.
It helps to be clear about scope. A phone receptionist service is not a full front-desk employee. Traditional in-house reception includes greeting visitors and handling office tasks beyond the phone, so compare the scope of what you need rather than treating a phone service as a complete replacement. You do not need a new phone number. You keep your public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk. The exact forwarding steps depend on your phone service, because carriers handle this differently.
Some services use star codes. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination to forward all calls and *73 to turn it off, while T-Mobile uses **21*1 followed by the number and # for unconditional forwarding. Other providers use an online portal instead, such as Spectrum Business Voice, where you sign in and manage forwarding in Voice Settings. Features also depend on which product you actually subscribe to, so identify your exact service before following any instructions.
One important limit: Google Voice explicitly does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice line is not a compatible path to this service. If you are unsure which forwarding method fits your setup, our guide to business phone forwarding walks through the main approaches.

Setup starts with your business, not with paperwork. You choose your business or enter its website, then check the details the service found about you. This is what the receptionist will draw from when callers ask questions, so it is worth reviewing carefully.
Next, you hear a personalized sample of how your receptionist would sound. This sample is a preview only and creates no real booking. If it sounds right, you move on to choosing your phone setup, which is where forwarding comes in.
For appointments, new bookings go into the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. If you prefer, you can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account. Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests rather than confirmed changes, so you stay in control of your schedule.
Sometimes a caller needs a person, not information. AllDayDesk can transfer calls to you, but only after you configure a transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen. Neither an immediate pickup nor an instant response is guaranteed, because a transfer still depends on someone being reachable at the destination you set.
When the receptionist cannot answer a question, does not know a price, or cannot find an open appointment, it takes a message instead of guessing. You review those messages, along with full transcripts and call summaries, in your dashboard whenever you check in.
A practical tip: decide in advance which situations you want transferred and which can wait for a message. Clear rules make the around-the-clock coverage more useful, because the receptionist knows when to interrupt you and when to simply take down the details.
You have three broad routes to around-the-clock phone coverage, and each fits a different situation. This comparison is based on documented features from each provider's own materials, not hands-on testing, and AllDayDesk is this site's own product.
Human answering services staff phones with real people around the clock. AnswerConnect offers 24/7 live business answering by people. Human virtual receptionist services exist too: Ruby advertises plans starting at $245 per month (checked October 9, 2026), and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionist service. Starting prices are not complete costs; you need each provider's current quote, included allowance, overage rates, hours, and contract terms to compare fairly. Human coverage and fees vary by service and plan, so do not assume all human options cost more or only work business hours.
AI receptionists answer with software. Smith.ai offers a separate AI receptionist product with on-demand escalation to its live agent network, which is a Smith.ai feature, not an AllDayDesk one. AllDayDesk answers around the clock using your saved business information, books into a dashboard calendar (with optional Google Calendar connection), and shows every call, transcript, and summary in your dashboard.
A third option is doing nothing formal: a voicemail box. That costs the least but gives callers no answers and no booking, and many callers will not leave a message. Weigh what each missed conversation is worth to your business against the monthly cost of whichever option you choose.

Around-the-clock coverage makes the most sense when callers contact you outside normal hours and expect an answer rather than a callback. Most owners answer their own phone during the day, so the practical question is what happens the rest of the time.
Service businesses are a natural fit: a homeowner with a burst pipe at 9 p.m. wants to reach someone, not a beep. Appointment-based businesses benefit from the receptionist booking new visits into the calendar while you work. Solo operators and small teams get coverage without hiring, since the AI handles the phone while you handle the work.
It is less of a fit if your callers only call during hours you already answer, or if every call genuinely requires your personal judgment before anything is said. Even then, message-taking means you at least get complete details instead of half-heard voicemails.
