AI phone answering for your business

24 Hour Business Answering Service

A 24 hour business answering service answers your calls around the clock — day, night, weekends, and holidays — using your saved business information. It answers questions it can, books new appointments, and takes a message when an answer, price, or time is unknown. You keep your number by forwarding calls to the service. This page covers how it works, phone setup, and choosing between AI and human-staffed options.

How it works

Set up your business receptionist

01

Add your business

Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.

02

Hear your receptionist

Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.

03

Connect your phone

Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.

Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.

What a 24 hour business answering service covers

A 24 hour answering service treats coverage as one continuous block of time: the same service answers at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday and 2 a.m. on a Sunday. That is different from an after-hours-only plan, which hands calls to a service only when your office is closed, or an overflow plan, which only steps in when you cannot pick up.

Full-time coverage matters when customers call outside normal hours — a homeowner with a burst pipe, a client in another time zone, or someone who simply only has time to call after dinner. Around-the-clock availability describes when the service is available to answer; it is not a guarantee that every single call connects, and network or forwarding issues can still affect any phone setup.

Most owners answer their own phone during the day, so a 24 hour service often works alongside the owner rather than replacing a front desk. It picks up when the owner is with a customer, asleep, or simply unable to reach the phone.

  • Daytime coverage: answers when you are busy, on another call, or out of the office
  • Night coverage: handles calls that would otherwise go to voicemail
  • Weekend and holiday coverage: the same service, no separate after-hours plan needed
  • Message taking: when an answer, price, or appointment is unknown, the caller is asked for a message instead of getting a guess

How AllDayDesk answers your calls

AllDayDesk answers business calls around the clock using information saved about your business. Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, then checking the details it found so the receptionist speaks accurately about your services and hours. You then hear a personalized sample so you know exactly how your calls will sound before anything goes live. The sample is a demonstration only — it does not create a real booking.

On a real call, the receptionist answers questions using your saved information, books new appointments, and takes a message whenever it does not know an answer, a price, or an available time. It does not guess. Existing appointment changes are passed to you as requests — the caller is told the change is a request for the owner, not a confirmed change.

Everything shows up in your dashboard: each call, its transcript, a summary, and any booking made. You can review overnight activity in the morning the same way you would read voicemail, but with more detail.

  • Answers using your saved business information, not a generic script
  • Books new appointments once your services and availability are configured
  • Takes a message instead of guessing on unknown answers or prices
  • Shows calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings in one dashboard

Keeping your number: forwarding your phone

You keep your existing business phone number. Calls reach AllDayDesk because you forward your line to it, and the forwarding instructions depend on your phone service — there is no single code that works everywhere. AllDayDesk walks you through phone setup as the last step, after you have heard your personalized sample.

As examples of verified carrier steps: Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination for all-call forwarding and *73 to turn it off, set from the phone while in Verizon coverage. T-Mobile uses **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, with ##21# to disable. Comcast Business Voice and Spectrum Business Voice manage forwarding through their online account portals rather than star codes. Optimum Business Phone uses *72 with a confirmation step, and *73 to disable.

One important limit: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice line is not a compatible path. If you are unsure what phone service you have, check your bill or your provider's account portal — the product name matters, because codes differ even within the same company's wireless, landline, and hosted products.

  • Forwarding is set up with your carrier, using that carrier's own steps
  • Wireless, landline, and hosted business products often use different codes or portals
  • Test forwarding with a real call from another phone before relying on it
  • Google Voice numbers cannot be forwarded to an automated answering system

Appointments, calendars, and transfers

New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. If you prefer Google Calendar, you can optionally connect and authorize your Google account in Settings — that connection is optional and is set up by you, not automatic. Other calendar systems and industry scheduling software are not part of the service.

Changes to existing appointments work differently from new bookings: a caller asking to move or cancel an existing appointment generates a request for you to review, not a confirmed change. That keeps you in control of your schedule.

The service can also transfer calls to you, but only after you configure a transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen. Because transfers depend on phone networks and your availability, neither that the call is picked up nor that you respond immediately is guaranteed. Transfers are best configured for situations where reaching you directly is genuinely useful.

  • New bookings land on the built-in dashboard calendar by default
  • Google Calendar is an optional connection you authorize in Settings
  • Existing appointment changes are requests for you, not confirmed changes
  • Transfers require you to set a destination and rules first

Choosing between AI and human-staffed services

A 24 hour answering service can be staffed by people, by AI, or a mix. Human services such as AnswerConnect and Ruby provide live receptionists around the clock; Ruby advertises plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026, and Smith.ai's human receptionist service uses per-call pricing that depends on your needs. Starting prices are not complete comparisons — you need each provider's included allowance, overage rates, hours, and contract terms from a current quote.

An in-house receptionist is a different comparison again. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, receptionist work includes greeting visitors and office tasks beyond phone answering, so a phone service and a full employee are not the same scope of work.

AllDayDesk, the service on this site, uses an AI receptionist built from your business information. The honest way to decide is to compare documented features side by side: what each option answers, how bookings are handled, what you pay per month and per minute, and how you review calls. Note that this comparison is based on published features, not hands-on testing of every provider.

  • Human services: real people answer; pricing varies by provider and usage
  • AI services: consistent answers from saved information; pricing structures differ by provider — compare current quotes
  • In-house staff: full office support, but a much larger commitment than phone coverage
  • Compare included minutes, overage rates, and contract terms from current quotes

More questions, answered

Do I have to change my business phone number?

No. You keep your public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk. The forwarding steps depend on your phone carrier, and AllDayDesk guides you through that choice during setup.

Will it book appointments on my calendar?

New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. You can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after authorizing your account. Other calendar systems are not supported.

What happens when the caller asks something the service does not know?

It takes a message rather than guessing. Unknown answers, prices, and appointment times are collected as messages for you, visible in the dashboard with the call transcript and summary.

Can callers reach me directly in an emergency?

The service can transfer calls, but only after you configure a transfer destination and rules. Neither pickup nor an immediate response is guaranteed, so configure transfers only where reaching you directly makes sense.

Can I use my Google Voice number?

No. Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so a Google Voice line cannot be used as the forwarding path.

How do I know what my receptionist will sound like?

During setup you hear a personalized sample built from your business details. The sample is a demonstration only and does not create a real booking.
