AI phone answering for your business
An after hours call answering service answers your business phone when you are not working: evenings, overnight, weekends and holidays. Instead of voicemail, callers reach an assistant that answers common questions from your saved business details, takes messages, and can book appointments. You keep your existing number and forward calls through your phone provider. AllDayDesk provides this coverage around the clock, with transcripts, summaries, messages and bookings in your dashboard.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
When your business is closed, calls still come in. Customers call in the evening after work, overnight with urgent problems, and on weekends when they finally have time to reach out. An after hours call answering service covers exactly those windows so callers talk to someone instead of an unanswered ring or a voicemail box.
With AllDayDesk, the assistant answers using the business information you save: your services, hours, pricing details and policies. It answers general questions, takes a detailed message when it does not know an answer or a price, and can book new appointments into your calendar. Every call leaves a transcript and a summary in your dashboard, so you start each morning knowing exactly who called and what they needed.
This kind of service is meant to work alongside you, not replace you. Most owners answer their own phones during the day. After hours coverage simply means the phone is handled when you cannot pick it up.
You do not need a new phone number. You keep your public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk using your existing phone service. The exact steps depend on your provider, so the setup flow asks how your phone is set up and gives you matching instructions.
Some providers use star codes dialed from your phone. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination number to forward all calls and *73 to turn forwarding off, while T-Mobile uses codes like **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding. Other providers, such as Spectrum Business Voice or Vonage Business Communications, manage forwarding through an online account portal or app instead.
One important note: forwarding a Google Voice number to an automated answering system is not supported by Google, so Google Voice customers need a different phone setup. If you are unsure what kind of phone service you have, check your bill or ask your provider which product you are on before following any instructions.

Setup starts by choosing your type of business or entering your website. AllDayDesk pulls together your business details, and you check them to make sure they are accurate. Then you hear a personalized sample of how the assistant would sound answering for your business, so you know what callers will experience before anything goes live.
After that, you choose your phone setup option and follow the instructions for your provider to forward calls during your closed hours. Once you have configured your services and availability, new appointments callers make after hours go into the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default. If you prefer, you can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account.
Keep in mind that the sample you hear is a demonstration only and does not create a real booking. Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests to approve, not confirmed changes, which keeps you in control of your schedule.
Some after-hours calls genuinely need you, such as a customer with an emergency who is willing to pay an after-hours rate. AllDayDesk can transfer calls to you, but you need to configure a transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen first. Because you may be asleep or unavailable, a transfer is not guaranteed to be picked up, and the assistant does not promise an immediate response on your behalf.
When the assistant does not know an answer, does not have a price, or cannot find a suitable appointment time, it takes a message instead of guessing. That message, along with the transcript and a summary, appears in your dashboard so you can follow up the next morning.
A helpful habit is deciding in advance which situations should transfer and which should become messages. For example, an owner might transfer calls from known commercial clients at night but let routine residential requests become messages for the morning.
You have two broad choices for after-hours coverage: an AI receptionist like AllDayDesk, or a service staffed by people. Human services such as Ruby, Smith.ai and AnswerConnect employ live receptionists who answer calls around the clock, and their pricing often works differently: Ruby advertises plans from $245 per month as of October 2026, and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing. Human services can handle judgment-heavy conversations, but billing is often per call or per minute with overage fees.
An AI receptionist answers using your saved business information, books appointments, takes messages and shows you transcripts, and AI services typically use a flat monthly subscription rather than per-call billing. The trade-off is that it is software: it follows your configured rules rather than improvising like a person. This comparison is based on the documented features and published pricing of each service, not hands-on testing, and AllDayDesk is this site's own product.
Another option is simply letting calls go to voicemail after hours. Voicemail costs nothing extra, but callers get no answers, no booking, and no confirmation anyone heard them until you call back. An answering service exists to close that gap.

After-hours answering works well for any owner who takes calls outside a normal workday. Plumbers, electricians and HVAC contractors get overnight no-heat and no-water calls. Property managers and landlords hear from tenants in the evening. Dentists, salons, law firms and other appointment-based businesses get booking requests on weekends when clients have free time to call.
The common thread is that you cannot personally answer at those hours, but the caller does not know that and will not always leave a voicemail. If your callers tend to simply try the next business on the list, having the phone handled after hours matters more than how polished the greeting sounds.

Each plan includes call minutes. Extra minutes cost more. See your estimate before you start. Your first 30 calls are free, with no credit card. Paid plans are monthly; cancel anytime.
No. You keep your public number and forward calls to the service using your existing phone provider. Instructions depend on whether your provider uses star codes or an online portal.
Yes, once you have configured your services and availability. New appointments go into the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, or into Google Calendar if you optionally connect and authorize your Google account in Settings.
It takes a message instead of guessing. You see the message, the transcript and a summary in your dashboard so you can respond later.
AllDayDesk is available around the clock, but availability is not a guarantee that every call connects. Phone network issues on the caller's or carrier's side can still affect any call.
Google does not support forwarding a Google Voice number to an automated answering system, so Google Voice customers need a different phone setup to use the service.
Changes to existing appointments are sent to you as requests to review and approve. They are not confirmed changes until you accept them.
Enter your business or website, review your details, and listen to a personalized sample of how AllDayDesk would handle your after-hours calls. No real bookings are made from the sample, so you can try it risk-free before forwarding a single call.
