AI phone answering for your business
An after hours call service answers your business phone during the hours you are closed, such as evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, while you keep answering your own calls during the day. Calls are forwarded to the service outside your open hours, and the caller hears a greeting based on your business information, gets answers to simple questions, and can leave a message or request an appointment. AllDayDesk provides this kind of coverage around the clock: you keep your existing phone number, forward calls to the service, and review calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings in a dashboard. Setup involves choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it saved, hearing a personalized sample, and then choosing how to forward your phone. This page explains what after hours coverage does, how forwarding works with common phone providers, and what to decide before you turn it on.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
When your business is closed, a caller who dials your number usually hears voicemail. Some callers leave a message; a caller who needs help right away might hang up and try the next business on their list instead. An after hours call service replaces that voicemail moment with a conversation. The caller hears a greeting tailored to your business, can ask basic questions, and can leave a detailed message or request an appointment.
AllDayDesk answers calls using the business information you save, so the caller gets answers drawn from your own details rather than a generic recording. When the caller asks something the service does not know, such as a price that is not listed or a question about a specific situation, it takes a message instead of guessing.
Everything the service handles shows up in your dashboard: the calls that came in, transcripts of what was said, summaries, and any bookings that were requested. You review them the next morning and decide what needs a callback.
You keep the phone number your customers already know. After hours coverage works by forwarding calls from your line to the service during the hours you choose. The exact steps depend on your phone provider, and the method differs between mobile lines, business landlines and hosted phone systems.
On Verizon mobile, dialing *72 plus the 10-digit destination forwards all calls, *71 plus the destination forwards calls that go unanswered, and *73 turns forwarding off. Setup must be done from the phone itself while in Verizon coverage, and forwarding applies to calls, not texts. On T-Mobile, **21*1 followed by the destination and # enables unconditional forwarding, **61*1 enables no-reply forwarding, and ##004# resets forwarding to defaults.
Business landline and hosted systems usually use either star codes or a web portal. Verizon business landline uses *72 and *73 from the same line. Optimum Business Phone uses *72 with the destination, with *73 to turn it off. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72 for all calls, *92 for no-answer and *90 for busy, each followed by the destination and #. Spectrum Business Voice manages forwarding in the online portal under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager, where you can choose all calls or busy/no-answer forwarding. Vonage Business Communications enables forwarding to a phone number from its Call Forwarding setting.
Before relying on any code or portal step, confirm which product you actually have, because instructions differ even within the same provider. If your line is a Google Voice number, note that Google explicitly does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so that path will not work for this kind of service.

Most providers offer two kinds of forwarding, and choosing between them shapes how after hours coverage works. Unconditional forwarding sends every call to the service, all the time, until you turn it off. Conditional forwarding sends calls only in specific situations, such as when you do not answer, your line is busy, or your phone is unreachable.
For after hours use, unconditional forwarding is the simplest approach: turn it on when you close and off when you reopen, and every call during closed hours reaches the service. Some owners prefer conditional forwarding so that a call rings their own phone first and only rolls over if unanswered, but that only makes sense if you actually have your phone on and are willing to answer during closed hours.
Not every line supports every forwarding type. Some carriers verify conditional features only for specific plans or devices, and a few services, like Google Voice, do not support forwarding to automated systems at all. If conditional forwarding is not available on your line, unconditional forwarding on a schedule you control is the practical alternative.

When a caller wants to book during closed hours, the service can schedule a new appointment using the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar, once you have configured your services and availability. If you prefer, you can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account. Other calendar systems and industry scheduling software are not part of the service.
Changes to existing appointments work differently: the service passes those requests to you rather than confirming them itself. That keeps you in control of your schedule when you are not there to approve a change.
For anything the service cannot resolve, it takes a message. You will see the call, the transcript and a summary in the dashboard, so you can return calls in the morning with full context instead of listening to a stack of voicemails.
Transfers to you or another number are also possible, but you must configure the destination and the rules for when transfers happen. A transfer is not guaranteed to be picked up or answered immediately, so think of transfers as one tool among several rather than the whole solution.
You have a few realistic choices for closed-hours coverage, and the right one depends on your call volume and how much you want to be involved. Doing nothing means voicemail handles everything. An automated service like AllDayDesk answers with your business information and books into a calendar. Human answering services staff phones with people, and their pricing varies widely; for example, Ruby advertises live virtual receptionist plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026, while Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionist service, so you would compare current quotes and included allowances directly.
An in-house receptionist covers daytime hours but is a full role with duties beyond the phone, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, so it is not really an after hours solution. Some AI services from other providers, such as Smith.ai's separate AI receptionist product, also exist; each has its own features and escalation options that you would verify on their pages.
When comparing options, look at what happens to a message, how appointments are handled, whether you keep your number, and what the total monthly cost is at your expected call volume. AllDayDesk is this site's own product, and the comparison here is based on documented features rather than hands-on testing of competing services.

Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website. AllDayDesk checks the details it finds, you confirm they are correct, and then you hear a personalized sample of how your calls would be answered. The sample is a demonstration only; it does not create a real booking. Once you are happy with it, you choose your phone setup and forward your line using the steps for your provider.
Most owners answer their own phone during the day, so after hours coverage fits naturally: you handle calls while you are open, and the service handles them when you are not. There is no setup duration promise to worry about; you move through the steps at your own pace and can test forwarding with a real call before your first closed night.

No. You keep your existing public number and forward calls to the service during closed hours. The forwarding steps depend on your phone provider.
Yes. New appointments go to the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar once you have configured your services and availability. You can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after authorizing your account. Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests rather than confirmed automatically.
It takes a message instead of guessing. You will see the call, transcript and summary in your dashboard so you can follow up.
Google explicitly does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so that path is not usable. A standard mobile or business line from a carrier that supports forwarding is the practical route.
Transfers are possible, but you must configure the destination and the rules for when they happen. Neither pickup nor an immediate response is guaranteed, so message taking remains an important part of coverage.
The same service can cover any hours you choose. If you want coverage during the day as well as nights and weekends, the setup is the same; you simply leave forwarding on more of the time.
Enter your business, check the details, and listen to a personalized sample of how AllDayDesk would answer your evening and weekend calls. No real booking is created, and you keep your existing number.
