AI phone answering for your business
An after hours phone answering service answers your business line during the hours you are not available, such as evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays. Instead of callers reaching a voicemail box, an answering service picks up, takes messages, answers basic questions from your saved business information, and can book appointments. AllDayDesk is an AI receptionist that covers those off-hours for you. You keep your existing phone number and forward calls to AllDayDesk only when you want coverage, so daytime calls still ring you directly. Setup involves choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details AllDayDesk found, hearing a personalized sample, and then choosing how to forward your phone. After that, calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings show up in your dashboard. This page explains what an after hours service should handle, how forwarding works on common phone services, and how to decide what your service covers after you close for the day.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
When your shop is closed, an after hours answering service becomes the voice of your business. Callers hear a greeting based on your business details, and the service handles the call the way you have set it up. With AllDayDesk, the receptionist uses the business information you saved, so it can answer common questions and describe your services without you being on the phone.
The service is meant to supplement your day, not replace it. Most owners answer their own phone during business hours. You simply forward your line to AllDayDesk outside those hours, and your public number stays the same for customers.
Here is what the service can typically handle during your off-hours:
A good after hours service has a clear rule for unknowns. If a caller asks something the service cannot answer from your saved information, such as a specific price for an unusual job or the status of an existing appointment, it takes a message instead of guessing. You then see the message, transcript, and summary in your dashboard and can follow up yourself.
The same applies to changes to existing appointments. Those are passed to you as requests to review, not confirmed changes, so nothing moves on your schedule without your approval. This keeps your calendar accurate and avoids promising callers something you have not agreed to yet.
You keep your current business number. Coverage works by forwarding calls from your phone service to AllDayDesk during the hours you choose. The exact steps depend on your provider, and many carriers offer two kinds of forwarding: all-call forwarding, which sends every call, and conditional forwarding, which sends calls only when you do not answer, are busy, or your phone is unreachable. For after hours use, all-call forwarding turned on when you close and off when you reopen is the simplest approach.
Examples from provider documentation: Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the 10-digit destination for all calls and *73 to turn it off, with *71 for unanswered calls on wireless lines. T-Mobile uses **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, and ##21# to disable. Optimum Business Phone uses *72 then the destination, confirmed by the destination answering, and *73 to disable. Spectrum Business Voice manages forwarding through the SpectrumBusiness.net portal under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager, where you can choose all calls or busy/no-answer. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72, destination, # for all calls and *92 for no-answer forwarding. These examples show the pattern, not a universal rule.
Before relying on any code, confirm it with your own provider, because codes differ between products from the same company, and some services or plans do not support forwarding at all. If your provider is not listed here, check their support pages or ask their support team which forwarding options your specific plan includes.

Sometimes a caller after hours needs a person right away, such as a customer with an emergency who wants to reach you directly. AllDayDesk can transfer calls, but only after you configure a transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen. Transfers are not guaranteed to connect: the caller may not reach you immediately, and pickup depends on you answering at the destination you set.
Because of that, many owners use transfers sparingly after hours and rely on messages for everything else. Decide in advance which situations, if any, should trigger a transfer, and make sure the destination number is one you will actually answer during your off-hours.
One of the biggest advantages of an after hours service is that callers can book instead of leaving a message and waiting for you to call back. New appointments go to the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default. Before that works, you need to configure your services and availability so the service knows what can be booked and when.
If you already run your schedule in Google Calendar, AllDayDesk supports an optional connection. After you connect and authorize your Google account in Settings, bookings can appear alongside your existing events. The connection is optional and set up by you; it is not automatic.
A sample call can show you how booking sounds, but the sample creates no real booking, so you can try it without touching your schedule.
Services differ in who answers, what hours they cover, and what they cost. Human answering services, such as AnswerConnect or Ruby, staff calls with people; Ruby advertises plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026, and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionist service. Human coverage and fees vary by service and plan, so compare included minutes or calls, overage charges, hours, and contract terms on a current quote rather than a starting price alone.
AI receptionists, including AllDayDesk and Smith.ai's separate AI receptionist product, answer calls with software. AllDayDesk uses your saved business information, shows transcripts and summaries in a dashboard, and books to your calendar. When comparing options, focus on what happens to a call your service cannot fully handle, how you review messages, and whether the pricing model matches your call volume.

Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website. AllDayDesk checks the details it finds, you confirm they are right, and then you hear a personalized sample of how your receptionist will sound. Once you are satisfied, you choose your phone setup and forward your line for the hours you want covered.
From then on, your dashboard is the record of everything that happened while you were away: calls, transcripts, summaries, messages, and any new bookings. You can adjust your business information whenever your services, prices, or hours change, so the receptionist always speaks accurately for you.

Each plan includes call minutes. Extra minutes cost more. See your estimate before you start. Your first 30 calls are free, with no credit card. Paid plans are monthly; cancel anytime.
No. You keep your existing public number. Calls are forwarded to AllDayDesk during the hours you choose, and callers dial the same number they always have.
Yes, once you have configured your services and availability. New bookings go to the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, and an optional Google Calendar connection is available in Settings after you connect and authorize your account.
It takes a message instead of guessing. You see the message, transcript, and summary in your dashboard and can follow up yourself. Changes to existing appointments also come to you as requests to approve.
No. Transfers depend on a destination and rules you configure, and neither pickup nor an immediate response is guaranteed. Messages are the dependable default for calls you do not take.
It depends on your phone provider. Many use a short code such as *72 to activate and *73 to deactivate, while others manage forwarding through an online portal. Confirm the exact steps for your specific service with your provider, since codes differ between products from the same company.
Google does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so AllDayDesk coverage is not available that way. You would need a phone line from a provider whose forwarding you can configure.
Enter your business details and listen to a personalized sample of how AllDayDesk would answer your evening and weekend calls. The sample creates no real booking, so you can try it risk-free before choosing your phone setup.
