AI phone answering for your business
An after hours phone service answers your business line during the hours you are not available, such as evenings, weekends and holidays, while you keep answering your own phone during the day. With AllDayDesk, you keep your existing public number and forward calls during the hours you choose. Callers hear a receptionist built from your saved business information, which can answer questions, take messages, and book new appointments.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
After hours phone service is a supplement to your normal answering, not a replacement for it. Most owners answer their own phone during business hours. The service takes over outside those hours: nights, weekends, and holidays, whenever you decide coverage should start and stop.
When a call comes in after hours, AllDayDesk answers using the business information you saved, such as your services, hours, and location. The receptionist can answer common questions, take a message when it does not know an answer or a price, and book new appointments. Every call, transcript, summary, and booking shows up in your dashboard, so you can review the evening or weekend activity the next morning.
A few limits are worth knowing up front. Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests, not confirmed changes. If a caller asks something the service cannot answer, it takes a message instead of guessing. And if you want calls transferred to you in urgent situations, you must configure a transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen; a pickup is not guaranteed.
You keep your existing business number. To route after-hours calls to the service, you turn on call forwarding with your phone carrier and enter the AllDayDesk number as the destination. The exact steps depend on who provides your phone service, so identify your exact product or plan before using any instructions.
Some carriers use short star codes. Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the 10-digit destination for all-call forwarding and *73 to turn it off; *71 handles unanswered calls on Verizon mobile. T-Mobile uses codes like **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, with ##21# to disable. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72, destination, # for all calls and *92 for no-answer forwarding. These examples only apply to those specific products; the same codes do not transfer across carriers.
Other providers manage forwarding through an account portal instead. Spectrum Business Voice handles forwarding in the Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager after signing in at SpectrumBusiness.net. Vonage Business Communications lets you select Call Forwarding and forward to a phone number. Comcast Business manages phone features through My Account and the Comcast Business App, and features depend on what you subscribe to. Frontier, Optimum, and Windstream each have their own procedures tied to specific products.
One important exception: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls to an automated system, so a Google Voice number cannot be forwarded to AllDayDesk. If your number is with Google Voice, you would need a different phone line to forward.

Before your first after-hours call, a few choices shape how well the service works for you. First, decide which hours count as after hours for your business. A plumber might want evening and weekend coverage; an accountant might only need weekday evenings. You decide when forwarding is active by when you enable it with your carrier.
Second, set up your services and availability in the dashboard. New appointments are booked on the built-in AllDayDesk calendar by default, and booking only works well once your services and open time slots are configured. If you prefer Google Calendar, you can optionally connect and authorize your Google account in Settings after setup; the connection is not automatic.
Third, decide what callers should be able to do. If you want urgent calls to reach you directly, configure a transfer destination and the rules for when transfers occur. Remember that a transfer is an attempt, not a guaranteed pickup, and the service takes a message whenever it cannot answer a question or confirm a price.
You have a few ways to handle after-hours calls, and the right one depends on your budget, call volume, and how much judgment each call needs. The comparison below covers documented features from each provider's own materials, not hands-on testing. AllDayDesk, the product on this site, is an AI receptionist that answers using your saved business information.
Human answering services, such as AnswerConnect's 24/7 live answering or Ruby's virtual receptionists, use people to answer calls. Ruby advertises plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026, but starting prices alone are not a full cost comparison; you need each provider's included allowance, overage rates, hours, and contract terms. Smith.ai offers both human per-call pricing and a separate AI receptionist product with its own escalation features.
A plain voicemail box is the simplest option and costs little, but callers get no answers, no booking, and no confirmation anyone will follow up. An in-house employee could cover evening hours, though reception work includes greeting visitors and office tasks beyond the phone, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, so a phone service is not a full employee replacement. Weigh cost per month against how many after-hours calls you actually get and how much each missed call matters to your schedule.

Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website. AllDayDesk checks the details it finds about your business, and you confirm or correct them. You then hear a personalized sample of how your receptionist would sound. The sample is a preview only; it does not create a real booking.
After you approve the sample, you choose your phone setup and follow the forwarding instructions for your carrier. Once forwarding is active, after-hours calls are handled by the service, and you can watch calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings appear in your dashboard. If anything sounds off in the transcripts, update your saved business information so future callers get better answers.
