AI phone answering for your business
An answering service for home service businesses answers your business phone when you are on a job, on another call, or away from the phone. With AllDayDesk, callers hear an assistant that uses your saved business details to answer questions, take messages, and pass along appointment requests. You keep your existing phone number by forwarding calls to AllDayDesk, and the exact forwarding steps depend on your phone provider. Setup involves choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details the assistant will use, hearing a personalized sample, and then choosing how to connect your phone. Everything the assistant handles — calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings — shows up in your dashboard. This page explains how that works for plumbers, HVAC techs, electricians, roofers, landscapers, cleaners, and other trades, what the service can and cannot do, and how to decide whether it fits your business.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
Most home service owners are their own office. When you are under a sink, on a roof, or driving between jobs, the phone rings and either goes to voicemail or gets missed. An answering service covers those moments. AllDayDesk answers around the clock using information you save about your business, such as your services, service area, and hours.
When a call comes in, the assistant greets the caller, answers questions it can from your saved details, and collects the caller's name, number, and reason for calling. If someone wants an appointment, the assistant passes the request along to you. When it does not know an answer or a price, it takes a message instead of guessing.
You keep your public phone number. Calls reach AllDayDesk through call forwarding, and the activation steps depend on your phone service, so you follow the instructions for your specific provider.
Setup starts with your business. You either choose your business from a listing or enter its website, and AllDayDesk builds the details the assistant will use. You then check those details for accuracy, because the assistant can only speak confidently about what you have confirmed.
Next, you hear a personalized sample so you know how your business will sound to callers. The sample is a demonstration only — it does not create a real booking or handle a real customer.
Finally, you choose your phone setup. The main step is forwarding your existing number to AllDayDesk, and the instructions vary by provider. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination number for all-call forwarding and *73 to turn it off, while T-Mobile uses codes like **21*1 followed by the destination for unconditional forwarding. Business landline and hosted systems such as Comcast Business, Spectrum Business Voice, or Vonage Business Communications manage forwarding through their own codes or portals, so identify your exact service before following any steps.

A homeowner calling about a leaking water heater at 8 p.m. hears the assistant answer in your business's name. If your saved details cover emergency policies or service areas, the assistant can share them. If the caller wants to book a drain cleaning, the assistant collects the details and passes along the appointment request.
If a caller asks something the assistant does not know — an exact price, a warranty question, or a scheduling slot outside what you have configured — it takes a message with the caller's name, number, and request. You see the message in your dashboard and follow up yourself.
If you configure call transfers, the assistant can attempt to pass a call to you at a destination you set, under rules you define. Because you may be on a ladder or in a crawlspace, remember that pickup is not guaranteed, so messages remain the reliable record of who called.
Everything the assistant handles is visible in your dashboard. You can review calls, read transcripts, check summaries, and see bookings without calling in or digging through voicemail.
New appointments are placed on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default. For that calendar to book correctly, you first configure your services and availability — the assistant cannot offer times you have not set up. If you prefer Google Calendar, an optional connection is available in Settings after you connect and authorize your Google account.
Changes to existing appointments are treated as requests for you to review, not confirmed changes. That keeps you in control of your schedule when a customer calls to move a job.
An answering service makes sense when calls arrive at times you cannot answer: evenings, weekends, or while you are mid-job. It is less useful if nearly all your calls already reach you and you prefer handling every conversation personally.
Compare options on what matters for a trade business. Human answering services, such as Ruby or AnswerConnect, staff calls with people and price accordingly — Ruby advertises plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026, and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionists, so request current quotes and check included minutes, overage rates, hours, and contract terms. AllDayDesk uses an AI assistant with plans that include a set number of minutes and per-minute overage rates; current pricing is displayed on this site separately from this page.
Also compare scope. An in-house receptionist handles visitors and office tasks beyond the phone, so a phone service is not a full employee replacement. And note that some AI providers, such as Smith.ai's separate AI receptionist product, offer their own escalation features — those are their capabilities, not AllDayDesk's.
