AI phone answering for your business

Auto Answering Service for Auto Repair Shops

An auto answering service answers your shop's phone when you are under a car, with a customer, or after hours. AllDayDesk is an auto answering service built around your shop's own details. You enter your business or website, check the saved details, and hear a personalized sample of how calls would sound. You keep your existing shop number by forwarding calls to AllDayDesk, and the exact steps depend on your phone carrier. Once set up, calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings show up in your dashboard. New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk calendar by default, with an optional Google Calendar connection available in Settings after you connect and authorize your account. If the caller asks something you have not saved an answer for, like a price for an unusual job, the service takes a message instead of guessing.

How an auto answering service works for your shop

Most shop owners answer their own phone, which means calls go unanswered while you are on a lift, doing a road test, or talking with a customer at the counter. An auto answering service covers those moments. AllDayDesk answers calls around the clock using the business information you save, so callers hear answers about your services, hours and location even when you cannot pick up.

Setup follows four steps. First, choose your business or enter its website so AllDayDesk can pull in your details. Second, check that the saved information is correct, because the service only knows what you give it. Third, hear a personalized sample of how your calls would sound. The sample is a demonstration only and does not create a real booking. Fourth, choose your phone setup and forward your existing number.

You keep your public shop number. Customers dial the same number they always have, and forwarding sends those calls to AllDayDesk. The forwarding instructions depend on which phone service you use, so check your carrier's guide before you start.

  • Answers calls around the clock using your saved business details
  • Keeps your existing shop number through call forwarding
  • Setup: choose your business, verify details, hear a sample, choose phone setup
  • The sample call is a demo and creates no real booking
  • If an answer or price is unknown, the service takes a message

Forwarding your shop's existing number

Forwarding is what lets you keep your advertised number. The activation steps depend entirely on your carrier and product, so identify the exact service name on your bill before following any guide. Here are verified examples from common providers:

Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the 10-digit destination to forward all calls, *71 for unanswered calls, and *73 to turn forwarding off. Setup must be done from the phone while in Verizon coverage. Verizon business landline uses *72 to activate and *73 to deactivate from the same line.

T-Mobile uses **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, with ##21# to disable, and separate codes for no-reply, unreachable and busy conditions. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72, destination, # for all calls, *92 for no-answer and *90 for busy. Spectrum Business Voice manages forwarding through the SpectrumBusiness.net portal under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager, where you choose all calls or busy/no-answer and set the destination.

Comcast Business features depend on whether you have Voice Mobility, Business Voice, VoiceEdge or Managed Voice, so confirm your product first. Vonage Business Communications enables forwarding by selecting Call Forwarding and choosing to forward to a phone number. Frontier's steps depend on whether you have Fiber Digital Voice, Digital Voice or another product. If your carrier does not support the forwarding type you want, your alternatives are forwarding all calls or handling after-hours calls through your existing voicemail.

  • Verizon mobile: *72 + destination (all calls), *71 (unanswered), *73 to disable
  • T-Mobile: **21*1 + destination + # (all calls), ##21# to disable
  • AT&T Phone for Business: *72, destination, # (all calls); *92 no-answer; *90 busy
  • Spectrum Business Voice: managed in the online portal, not with star codes
  • Always confirm your exact carrier product before using any code

What callers hear and what happens to appointments

Callers hear a receptionist that answers using your shop's saved details: services offered, hours, location and anything else you have entered. When a caller wants to book, the service can schedule new appointments on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. If you prefer, you can connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account.

Changes to existing appointments work differently. A caller asking to move or cancel an existing booking creates a request for you to review, not a confirmed change. That keeps you in control of your schedule while the caller still gets a clear response.

Not every question has a saved answer. If a caller asks for a price on an unusual repair or something you have not provided, the service takes a message instead of guessing. You see the message in your dashboard and can call back with the right answer.

Transfers to you are possible, but you must configure a destination number and rules first. Even then, neither pickup nor an immediate response is guaranteed, so messages remain part of how the service handles calls.

  • New bookings go on the built-in dashboard calendar once services and availability are configured
  • Optional Google Calendar connection in Settings after you connect and authorize your account
  • Changes to existing appointments are requests for you, not confirmed changes
  • Unknown answers or prices become messages instead of guesses
  • Transfers need a configured destination and rules, with no pickup guarantee

Running the service from your dashboard

Everything the service does on your behalf is visible in the AllDayDesk dashboard. You can review calls, read transcripts, check summaries and see bookings in one place. This matters for a shop because a missed detail on a phone call can mean a wrong part ordered or a callback without context. Reading the transcript of a message about a noise complaint or a parts question lets you prepare before you call back.

Because you control the saved business information, keeping it current is part of running the service well. If your hours change, you add a service, or you update pricing you want shared, edit your details so callers hear accurate information.

  • Calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings all appear in the dashboard
  • Review messages and transcripts before returning calls
  • Update saved business details whenever your hours or services change

Choosing between answering options for your shop

Auto shops generally weigh three routes: doing it yourself with voicemail, hiring a person, or using an automated service. Voicemail is free but offers no conversation, so a caller who reaches voicemail may simply hang up instead of leaving details. An in-house receptionist handles calls during their shift but also costs a salary, and the BLS notes receptionist duties include greeting visitors and office tasks beyond the phone, so compare scope rather than treating a phone service as a full employee replacement.

Human answering services exist too. Ruby advertises live virtual receptionist plans starting at $245 per month as of October 9, 2026, and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionist service. Those are starting prices only; verify included minutes, overages, hours and contract terms on a current quote. Smith.ai also sells a separate AI receptionist product with escalation to its live agent network, which is that company's feature and not AllDayDesk's.

AllDayDesk is this site's own product, and this comparison covers documented features rather than hands-on testing. The practical decision comes down to when your calls actually come in. If missed calls happen while you are working on vehicles during open hours, forwarding only unanswered calls may cover it. If calls arrive after hours or on weekends, all-call forwarding with around-the-clock availability fits better.

  • Voicemail: no cost, but no conversation and often no message
  • In-house receptionist: salary cost, and duties go beyond phone answering
  • Human services: Ruby from $245/month as of October 9, 2026; Smith.ai prices per call
  • AllDayDesk: answers around the clock using your saved shop details
  • Compare included minutes, overages and hours on any current quote

More questions, answered

Do I have to change my shop's phone number?

No. You keep your existing public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk. The forwarding steps depend on your phone carrier, so follow the guide for your specific service.

Can the service book appointments into my Google Calendar?

Google Calendar is supported as an optional connection. After setup, you connect and authorize your Google account in Settings. By default, new appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar.

What if a caller asks something the service does not know?

When an answer, price or appointment detail is unknown, the service takes a message instead of guessing. You see the message in your dashboard and can respond with accurate information.

Will the service transfer urgent calls to me?

Transfers are possible once you configure a destination number and rules. Neither pickup nor an immediate response is guaranteed, so messages are still part of how calls are handled.

Does the sample call create a real appointment?

No. The personalized sample is a demonstration of how your calls would sound. It does not create a real booking.

Can I forward only calls I miss instead of all calls?

That depends on your carrier. Some services, like Verizon mobile with *71 or AT&T Phone for Business with *92, support no-answer forwarding. Check your carrier's guide, because conditional forwarding is not available on every plan or product.
