AI phone answering for your business
A call answering service 24 7 is a service that answers your business phone around the clock — during the day, at night, on weekends and on holidays — so callers reach a real answer instead of an unanswered ring or a voicemail box. You keep your existing business number and forward your calls to the service. The service answers using your saved business information: it can share answers to common questions, take messages, and book new appointments into a calendar you control. AllDayDesk is an example of this kind of service: it answers calls 24/7 using your business details, and you can see calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings in a dashboard. Setting it up means choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it learned, hearing a personalized sample, and then turning on call forwarding with your phone provider. This page explains how around-the-clock answering works, what decisions you should make before signing up, and how forwarding is turned on.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
When you sign up, the service learns about your business — what you do, your services, your hours and your pricing rules — and uses that information to answer calls in your place. Callers dial the same number they always have. The forwarding happens quietly on your phone line, so from the caller's side nothing changes except that someone picks up.
A 24/7 service covers every part of the week as one continuous service. That includes daytime calls you miss because you are on a job or with a customer, evening calls after you close, weekend calls, and holiday calls. You do not switch anything on and off; the same answering behavior applies all week.
AllDayDesk answers calls around the clock using the business information you save. When a caller asks something the service does not know — like a price you have not listed or an appointment question it cannot resolve — it takes a message instead of guessing. Existing appointment changes are passed to you as requests, not confirmed changes, so you stay in control of your schedule.
Most 24/7 answering services can book new appointments, but how bookings land in your schedule matters. With AllDayDesk, new appointments go into the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. That means you tell the system what you offer and when you can take appointments, and the service books within those limits.
If you prefer to work out of Google Calendar, AllDayDesk supports an optional Google Calendar connection in Settings, after you connect and authorize your Google account. It is an optional add-on, not something that happens automatically, and no other calendar or industry scheduling software is claimed to be supported.
One rule worth knowing before you sign up with any service: changes to existing appointments are usually handled as requests for the owner rather than confirmed edits. A caller asking to move a Tuesday visit will generate a request you review, which protects your schedule from accidental changes.
You keep your public phone number. To route calls to the answering service, you turn on call forwarding with your phone provider, and the exact steps depend on who provides your phone service. There is no single code that works everywhere, so identify your exact product first — a carrier's wireless service, business landline, and hosted voice products often use different steps.
Some verified examples show how much this varies. Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the 10-digit destination for all-call forwarding, *71 for unanswered calls, and *73 to disable, done from the phone itself (verizon-wireless). Verizon business landline uses *72 to activate and *73 to deactivate from the same line (verizon-business). T-Mobile uses **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, with ##21# to disable (tmobile). Spectrum Business Voice manages forwarding in the online portal under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager rather than with star codes (spectrum-business).
If your provider is not listed here, the reliable path is to check your provider's own support pages or call their support line and ask for all-call forwarding to an outside number. Be careful not to mix up unconditional forwarding (all calls) with conditional forwarding (busy or no-answer only) — they are different features and often use different codes. One known limitation: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice number is not a suitable line to forward (google-voice-routing).

Sometimes a caller needs a person — an emergency you define, a VIP customer, or a question only you can answer. Answering services can handle this by transferring the call to you. With AllDayDesk, transfers require you to configure a destination number and the rules for when transfers happen. Neither an immediate pickup nor a guaranteed response is promised, because a transfer still depends on you being reachable at the destination you set.
When a call cannot be answered with the information on file — an unknown price, an availability question it cannot resolve, or anything else uncertain — the service takes a message. You see the message, transcript and summary in your dashboard and can call the person back. This message-taking applies to ordinary calls; the product facts do not establish any special automatic backup behavior tied to failed transfers, so review your transfer rules carefully when you set them.
A practical tip: set your transfer destination to a number you actually answer, and keep your transfer rules narrow. Broad rules mean more interruptions; narrow rules mean more messages waiting for you. Choose based on how urgent your typical after-hours calls really are.
There are two broad kinds of 24/7 answering services: those answered by people and those answered by AI. Both exist and both are legitimate choices; the right one depends on your call volume, budget and how you want calls handled. This comparison covers documented features from each provider's own pages, not hands-on testing, and AllDayDesk — the AI service described on this site — is one of the options compared.
Human services include AnswerConnect, which offers 24/7 live business answering by people (answerconnect), and Ruby, which advertises live virtual receptionist plans starting at $245 per month as of October 2026 (ruby). Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionist service, with costs depending on the needs you select (smith); it also sells a separate AI receptionist product with on-demand escalation to its live agent network (smith-ai). Starting prices are not complete costs — you need each provider's included allowance, overage rates, hours and contract terms from a current quote.
AI services like AllDayDesk answer using your saved business information, show calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings in a dashboard, and book into a calendar you configure. When comparing any provider, ask the same questions: What happens when the service does not know an answer? Where do bookings go? How do I see what was said on each call? How is after-minutes or overage pricing handled? The answers tell you more than any feature list.

Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, so the service can pull together your business details. You then check those details to make sure the answers it will give callers are accurate — this step matters most, because the saved information is what the service uses on every call.
Next, you hear a personalized sample of how your calls would be answered. The sample is a preview only; it does not create a real booking. If the wording or information sounds right, you move on to phone setup, where you follow your provider's forwarding instructions to route calls to the service. There is no promised setup duration, so plan to complete the steps when you have a few uninterrupted minutes.
Once live, your dashboard is the place to watch how the service is doing: every call, transcript, summary and booking appears there. If you want bookings to land in Google Calendar instead of the built-in dashboard calendar, connect and authorize your Google account in Settings.

Each plan includes call minutes. Extra minutes cost more. See your estimate before you start. Your first 30 calls are free, with no credit card. Paid plans are monthly; cancel anytime.
No. You keep your public number and forward calls to the service. Callers dial the same number they always have; the forwarding happens on your phone line with your provider.
Around-the-clock availability describes when the service is available to answer, not a guarantee that every call connects. Forwarding depends on your phone line working and your provider's service, so test forwarding after you activate it.
New appointments use the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured services and availability. Google Calendar is supported as an optional connection in Settings after you connect and authorize your Google account.
When an answer, price or appointment is unknown, the service takes a message instead of guessing. You see the message and transcript in your dashboard and can follow up yourself.
Google explicitly does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice number is not a suitable line to forward to the service. Use a standard carrier or business phone line instead.
Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests, not confirmed changes. You review and approve them, so your schedule is never changed without your say-so.
Enter your business or its website, check the details, and listen to a personalized sample of how your calls would be answered — day, night, weekends and holidays. No real bookings happen in the sample, so you can try it with nothing at stake.
