AI phone answering for your business
A contractor phone answering service answers your business line when you are on a job site, up a ladder, or done for the day. Callers reach a receptionist that knows your business, gives basic answers, takes detailed messages, and collects appointment requests. You keep your existing phone number by forwarding calls to the service, and you read every call, transcript, summary, and booking in a dashboard. AllDayDesk is an around-the-clock AI answering service built for this: you enter your business or website, it learns your services and details, you hear a personalized sample call, then you forward your number and go back to work. It cannot promise every call connects, and when it does not know an answer, a price, or an opening, it takes a message instead of guessing. This page explains how the service works for contractors, what it can and cannot do, how to keep your number, and how to compare it with a human answering service or a full-time hire.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
Most contractors cannot stop a job to grab the phone, and work hours rarely match when homeowners call. An answering service sits between your phone and your caller. When you forward your line, calls route to the service instead of ringing unanswered. The receptionist greets the caller using your saved business information, answers simple questions, and gathers what you need: name, callback number, address, the type of work, and any timing details.
AllDayDesk uses your business details or website to learn what you do before the first call. You can hear a personalized sample call before turning anything on, so you know how your business will sound. The sample is a demonstration only and does not create a real booking.
Everything lands in your dashboard: call records, transcripts, summaries, and any appointment requests. You check it from the truck or at night instead of sorting through voicemails.
Existing appointment changes are treated as requests for you to approve, not confirmed changes. That protects your schedule when a caller asks to move a job.
Contractor calls usually fall into a few buckets, and the service treats each differently. For estimate and quote requests, the receptionist collects the caller's details and the scope of the work, then passes the message to you so you can price it yourself. It does not invent prices. If a caller asks for a price the service does not have saved, it takes a message.
For scheduling, once you have configured your services and availability, new appointments can be booked on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar. If you prefer Google Calendar, you can connect and authorize your Google account in Settings; that connection is optional and is the supported external calendar. Other calendars or industry scheduling software are not part of the service.
For callers who need you directly, the service can transfer the call to a destination you configure, along with rules for when transfers happen. Transfers depend on your setup, and neither pickup nor an immediate response is guaranteed, so treat transfers as one tool among messages and bookings.
For questions outside your saved information, the service takes a message rather than guessing about materials, warranties, or job specifics.
You do not change your advertised number. You forward your existing line to the service, and the instructions depend on your phone provider. On Verizon mobile, dial *72 plus the 10-digit destination for all calls, *71 plus the destination for unanswered calls, and *73 to turn forwarding off; set it up from the phone while in coverage. Verizon business landline uses *72 to activate and *73 to deactivate from the same line.
Other providers differ. T-Mobile uses codes like **21*1 plus the destination and # for unconditional forwarding. Optimum Business Phone uses *72, then the destination, with *73 to disable. Spectrum Business Voice manages forwarding in its online portal rather than with star codes. Vonage Business Communications enables forwarding to a phone number through its Call Forwarding setting. The exact steps depend on which product you actually have, so identify your service first.
One important limit: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice line is not a compatible path. If you are unsure how your line forwards, our forwarding guides walk through the major carriers step by step.

You have three realistic ways to cover the phone: an AI service like AllDayDesk, a human answering service, or an in-house receptionist. Each has trade-offs worth weighing honestly.
Human answering services staff phones with people. Published starting prices we checked in October 2026 include Ruby at $245 per month, while Smith.ai uses per-call pricing that depends on your needs; both require a current quote to compare fully, since included minutes, hours, and contract terms vary. An in-house receptionist does more than answer phones, including greeting visitors and office tasks, so compare scope, not just cost.
AllDayDesk is an AI receptionist, which means consistent availability around the clock and dashboard visibility into every call, with pricing shown separately on this site. Around-the-clock availability is not a guarantee that every call connects, and transfers depend on your configuration. Some callers simply prefer a human voice; if that matters most to your customer base, weigh it in your decision.
A fair way to decide: list the call types you actually get, note which ones need judgment or a human touch, and check which option covers them within your budget. Our comparison guide goes deeper on the AI-versus-human question.

Setup follows the same path for any trade. First, choose your business from search or enter its website so the service can learn your services, service area, and details. Review what it pulled in and correct anything wrong, since callers will hear this information.
Second, listen to the personalized sample call. This shows how your business will be represented and confirms the details sound right. Remember the sample does not create a real booking.
Third, choose your phone setup. You keep your public number and forward calls to the service using your provider's forwarding instructions. Then configure your services and availability so new appointment requests can be placed on the dashboard calendar, and optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings if you authorize your account.
From then on, check the dashboard for calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings. If you want calls forwarded only when you miss them, conditional forwarding is the setting to look at.

Each plan includes call minutes. Extra minutes cost more. See your estimate before you start. Your first 30 calls are free, with no credit card. Paid plans are monthly; cancel anytime.
No. You keep your public number and forward calls to the service. The forwarding steps depend on your phone provider, and our carrier guides cover the common ones.
New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured services and availability. Google Calendar is an optional connection you can set up and authorize in Settings.
If the price is in your saved business information, the service can share it. If it is unknown, the service takes a message so you can quote the job yourself.
The service can transfer calls to a destination you configure, with rules for when transfers happen. Pickup and immediate response are not guaranteed, so messages and bookings remain part of the coverage.
The supported calendar connections are the built-in dashboard calendar and the optional Google Calendar connection in Settings. Other scheduling or industry software is not part of the service.
The service is available around the clock, but availability is not a guarantee that every call connects. Calls, transcripts, and summaries in your dashboard show you exactly what was handled.
Enter your contracting business, listen to a personalized sample call, and decide if AllDayDesk fits how you want your phone handled. Setup starts with the sample, not a contract.
