AI phone answering for your business

Local Answering Service

A local answering service answers your business phone when you are busy, closed, or simply with another customer, and it does this while you keep the same local number your community already knows. You do not change your number or print anything new. Instead, you forward calls from your existing line to the service, and callers reach a receptionist who knows your business details. With AllDayDesk, the service answers calls around the clock using the business information you save, takes messages, and can book new appointments on your dashboard calendar once you have set up your services and availability. You keep your public number, forward your calls, and stay in control of what happens next.

Why a local number still matters

For many small businesses, the phone number on the truck, the website, and the door is part of the local identity. Customers recognize the area code, save it in their phones, and call it again next time. Changing it means new cards, new listings, and confused callers who dial the old number and reach nothing.

A local answering service solves this by leaving your number in place. Your customers keep dialing the number they already trust. Behind the scenes, that number simply forwards to the answering service, so the caller's experience stays local even though the answering happens elsewhere. AllDayDesk is built around this approach: you keep your public number and forward calls to the service using instructions that depend on your phone provider.

  • Your existing number stays on your ads, website, and door
  • Callers dial the same number they have always used
  • Forwarding happens at the phone level, so nothing changes for the caller
  • You can turn forwarding off and answer your own phone again anytime

How to forward your local number

Forwarding instructions depend entirely on who provides your phone service, so the first step is identifying your provider and the exact product on your bill. Wireless carriers, cable phone services, and hosted business voice systems all use different methods.

Some carriers use short star codes dialed from the phone itself. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the ten-digit destination to forward all calls, *71 for unanswered calls, and *73 to turn forwarding off, and setup must be done from the phone while in Verizon coverage. T-Mobile uses codes like **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, with ##21# to disable it. Landline and business products differ: Optimum Business Phone uses *72 then the destination, with *73 to deactivate, and AT&T Phone for Business uses *72, the destination, then # for all calls and *92 for no-answer forwarding.

Other providers manage forwarding through a web portal instead of codes. Spectrum Business Voice, for example, handles forwarding in Voice Settings or the Forwarding Manager after signing in at SpectrumBusiness.net, and Vonage Business Communications lets you enable forwarding to a phone number from its Call Forwarding setting. Comcast Business features depend on which service you subscribe to, such as Voice Mobility or Managed Voice, so check your product first.

One important exception: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice line is not a compatible starting point for this kind of service.

  • Identify the exact product name on your phone bill before following any instructions
  • Wireless carriers often use star codes dialed from the phone itself
  • Business voice systems often use a web portal or admin dashboard instead
  • Test the destination with a real call after activating forwarding
  • Keep the disable code or portal steps handy so you can turn forwarding off

What the service does once calls arrive

With AllDayDesk, setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it pulls in, and hearing a personalized sample of how your calls would be answered. The sample is a demonstration only and creates no real booking. After that, you choose your phone setup and forward your number.

Once live, the service answers calls around the clock using your saved business information. It answers common questions, takes messages when it does not know an answer or a price, and can book new appointments on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar once you have configured your services and availability. If you prefer, you can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account. Every call, transcript, summary, and booking shows up in your dashboard, so you can review what happened and call people back.

Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests rather than confirmed changes, so you stay in charge of your schedule. If you want certain calls handed to you directly, you can configure transfers with a destination and rules you set; a transfer is not guaranteed to be picked up or answered immediately.

  • Calls answered around the clock using your saved business details
  • Messages taken whenever an answer, price, or opening is unknown
  • New bookings go to the dashboard calendar by default, with optional Google Calendar in Settings
  • Transcripts, summaries, and bookings visible in your dashboard
  • Existing appointment changes arrive as requests for you to approve

Choosing between local options

You have a few ways to handle calls you cannot pick up. A plain voicemail box is free but puts all the work on the caller, who may hang up rather than leave a message. A human answering service employs people to answer your line; for example, Ruby advertises live virtual receptionist plans starting at $245 per month, and Smith.ai sells human receptionist service with per-call pricing, though real costs depend on the current quote, included allowance, and hours. An in-house receptionist handles phones plus front-desk work, but the role covers greeting visitors and office tasks beyond answering, so it is a broader hire than a phone service.

An AI answering service like AllDayDesk answers around the clock using your saved business information, with plans based on included minutes. The right choice depends on your call volume, your budget, and how much judgment your calls need. This comparison is based on documented features and published starting prices, not hands-on testing of each provider.

  • Voicemail: no cost, but callers do the work and some hang up
  • Human answering service: real people, priced per plan or per call, verify included hours and overages
  • In-house receptionist: covers phones plus office duties, a broader and costlier hire
  • AI answering service: around-the-clock coverage from your saved business details, priced by included minutes

More questions, answered

Do I have to change my phone number?

No. You keep your existing local number and forward it to the service. Your customers keep dialing the same number they always have.

Can I forward only calls I miss instead of all calls?

Many providers support conditional forwarding for busy or unanswered calls, but the codes and availability depend on your exact carrier and product. Check your provider's instructions, and if conditional forwarding is not supported on your line, forwarding all calls is the usual alternative.

What happens if the service does not know an answer?

It takes a message instead of guessing. You see the message, transcript, and summary in your dashboard and can call the person back.

Does it work with Google Calendar?

Yes, as an optional connection. After setup, you can connect and authorize your Google account in Settings. By default, new appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar.

Can callers reach me directly for urgent matters?

You can configure transfers with a destination number and rules you set. A transfer is not guaranteed to be picked up or answered immediately, so the service also takes messages when needed.

Can I use my Google Voice number?

Google does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice line is not a compatible starting point. Use a carrier or business phone line instead.
