AI phone answering for your business
Out of hours call handling means your business phone is covered during the times you are not available to answer it yourself: evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays. Instead of calls ringing into an empty office or going to voicemail, they are forwarded to a service that answers in your business's name, takes down what the caller needs, and either books an appointment or takes a message for you to handle the next day. AllDayDesk provides this coverage around the clock. You keep your existing phone number, forward calls to AllDayDesk during the hours you choose, and review every call, transcript, summary, and booking in your dashboard. Setting it up means choosing your business or entering its website so AllDayDesk can learn your details, hearing a personalized sample, and then turning on forwarding with your phone provider. This page explains how out of hours coverage works, what decisions you should make before turning it on, and how to forward your specific phone line.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
Out of hours call handling is a supplement to your normal daytime answering, not a replacement for it. Most owners answer their own phone during business hours. The service takes over during the windows you define: after closing, overnight, weekends, and holidays. You decide which hours are covered, and calls that arrive inside those windows are handled on your behalf.
When a call comes in after hours, the AllDayDesk receptionist answers using the business information you saved, so callers hear a greeting that sounds like your business. The receptionist can answer questions about your services and prices when that information is on file, book new appointments, and take messages when the answer is unknown. If a caller asks something the saved information does not cover, the receptionist takes a message instead of guessing.
Everything the receptionist does shows up in your dashboard: the call itself, a transcript, a summary, and any booking that was made. You can review overnight activity in the morning and follow up on messages the next day.
Out of hours call handling works best when you set it up with a few clear decisions. These are choices only you can make, because they depend on how your business runs and what you are willing to promise callers.
Two situations deserve special attention before you rely on out of hours coverage. First, changes to existing appointments are treated as requests for you, not confirmed changes. If a caller wants to move or cancel a booking made earlier, the receptionist records the request and you approve or handle it later. This protects your schedule from accidental changes while you sleep.
Second, transfers to you are possible, but only after you configure a transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen. A transfer is not guaranteed to be picked up or answered immediately, so think about which calls truly justify interrupting you and which can wait as a message. When the receptionist does not know an answer, a price, or an opening, the default is to take a message rather than guess.
You keep your public phone number. Out of hours coverage works by forwarding calls from your line to AllDayDesk during the hours you choose. The exact steps depend on your phone provider, and the instructions differ between mobile lines, business landlines, and hosted phone systems, so identify your exact service before you start.
As examples from published provider guides: Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination for all-call forwarding and *71 for unanswered calls, with *73 to disable. T-Mobile uses codes like **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding. Spectrum Business Voice manages forwarding in its online portal under Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager, where you can choose all calls or busy/no-answer conditions. Vonage Business Communications enables forwarding by selecting Call Forwarding and choosing a destination number. Always verify forwarding works by having someone call your business line from an outside phone.
One important limit: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice line is not a compatible path to this kind of service. If your provider is not listed here, check their support pages or ask them whether conditional forwarding (forwarding on no answer or busy) is available on your specific plan, since not every plan supports it.

Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, so AllDayDesk can gather your services, prices, and other public details. You then check that the information is correct, because the receptionist answers from what is saved. Next, you hear a personalized sample of how your receptionist will sound. The sample is a preview only and does not create a real booking. Finally, you choose your phone setup and turn on forwarding with your provider for the hours you want covered.
Before off-hours bookings can land on your calendar, configure your services and availability in the dashboard. New appointments use the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default. If you prefer, you can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account.
You have a few realistic ways to handle calls after hours, and each has tradeoffs. Voicemail is free and always on, but it offers no conversation, cannot answer questions, and cannot book anything while you are away; you learn what a caller wanted only after you listen. A human answering service gives you people on the phone around the clock; published starting prices for some human services run higher, for example Ruby advertises plans starting at $245 per month, and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionists, so actual costs depend on the quote, included allowance, and overages. An AI receptionist like AllDayDesk answers from your saved business details, books into your calendar, and shows you transcripts and summaries in a dashboard.
This comparison is based on documented features and published pricing pages, not hands-on testing of each service. AllDayDesk is this site's own product. The right choice depends on your call volume, how complex your callers' questions are, and your budget. If you want to weigh the tradeoffs in more depth, our comparison guide covers AI and human receptionists side by side.

No. You keep your public number. Calls are forwarded to AllDayDesk during the hours you choose, and callers dial the same number they always have.
Yes, once you have configured your services and availability. New appointments go into the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, and you can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after authorizing your account.
The receptionist takes a message. It does not guess at answers, prices, or openings, and you see the message and transcript in your dashboard.
Changes to existing appointments are recorded as requests for you to review, not confirmed changes. You decide whether to accept them.
Transfers are possible after you configure a destination number and rules for when they happen. Pickup and immediate response are not guaranteed, so many owners reserve transfers for the calls that truly cannot wait.
Google does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice line cannot be used as the forwarding path. Most carrier and business phone lines can be forwarded; check your provider's instructions for your exact service.
Enter your business or its website, check the details, and listen to a personalized sample of how your after-hours calls would be answered. Setup starts there, and you keep your existing number.
