Business Landline Divert to Mobile: How It Works and What to Know First

Diverting a business landline to a mobile means your main business number routes incoming calls to your cell, so you can answer away from the desk. Providers usually activate it with a short code like *72 or a setting in your online account. Below are the forwarding modes, activation steps for major carriers, and the limits to know first.

What diverting a landline to mobile actually does

When you divert (or forward) your business landline to a mobile, the phone company routes calls that dial your office number to your cell instead. Callers still dial the same number they always have, so your advertising, website, and business listings stay unchanged. The call simply rings somewhere else.

Forwarding moves voice calls only. Text messages sent to a landline generally do not follow the forwarded call, and features tied to the original line, like its voicemail, may be bypassed while forwarding is on. With all-call forwarding active, the desk phone itself typically will not ring at all.

There are two main modes to choose from, and picking the right one matters more than the exact dialing steps.

  • All-call (unconditional) forwarding: every incoming call goes straight to your mobile, immediately, with no ring at the desk phone.
  • No-answer forwarding: the desk phone rings first; if nobody picks up after a set number of rings, the call moves to your mobile.
  • Busy forwarding: if the desk line is already on a call, the next caller is routed to your mobile.
  • Unreachable forwarding: used mostly on wireless lines for when the phone is off or out of service.

How activation works: codes, portals, and confirming it took

Traditional landline and voice services usually use short star codes dialed from the business line itself. The pattern is similar across many providers: a code to turn forwarding on, the ten-digit destination number, then a confirmation tone or message, and a second code to turn it off.

Newer hosted and app-based business phone systems often skip codes entirely and manage forwarding through a web dashboard or mobile app instead. Check which product you actually have before following any instructions, because the same carrier can sell several different phone products with different steps.

Whichever method you use, place a test call from an outside phone, such as a friend's cell, to confirm calls arrive the way you expect. Then dial the deactivate code or flip the portal setting back when you want calls ringing at the desk again.

  • Verizon business landline: dial *72 and follow the activation instructions from the line; *73 deactivates. (verizon-business)
  • AT&T Phone for Business: all calls *72, destination, #; no-answer *92, destination, #; busy *90, destination, #; *73#, *93#, and *91# turn each off. (att-business)
  • Comcast Managed Voice (Panasonic TPA65 guide): lift the handset, dial *72 plus the destination, and hang up; *92 sets no-answer and *90 sets busy forwarding. (comcast-managed)
  • Optimum Business Phone: dial *72, wait for dial tone, then the destination; an answered test call confirms it, and *73 turns it off. (optimum)
  • Frontier Unlimited Digital Voice: lift the handset, dial *72, wait for a second dial tone, enter the destination, and listen for confirmation; *73 disables. (frontier-digital)
  • Spectrum Business Voice: sign in to SpectrumBusiness.net, open Voice, choose the number, then Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager to enable all-calls or busy/no-answer forwarding. (spectrum-business)
  • Vonage Business Communications: select Call Forwarding and enable forwarding to a phone number in the account settings. (vonage)
  • Windstream OfficeSuite UC: use the My Call Forwarding widget in the WE Connect dashboard to set immediate forwarding or route unanswered calls after a chosen ring count. (windstream-officesuite)

Limits and gotchas before you rely on it

Forwarding to a mobile works well as a stopgap, but it has real limits. Your cell becomes the only line answering, so if you are on another call, driving, or in a spot with weak signal, callers may hit your personal voicemail or dead air. All-call forwarding also means the desk phone never rings, even when you are standing next to it.

Costs and features depend on your plan. Some providers charge for forwarding or count forwarded calls as long distance, so check with your carrier. Conditional forwarding is not available on every landline product, and some carriers only publish all-call codes for certain services. If your provider does not support the mode you want, your realistic alternatives are a hosted phone system with built-in routing, or an answering service that receives forwarded calls only when you cannot answer.

One more note: forwarding from a Google Voice number to an automated answering system is not supported by Google, so Google Voice is not a workaround for this kind of setup.

  • Forwarded calls may count against plan minutes or incur long-distance charges depending on your provider.
  • Texts to your landline do not forward; only calls do.
  • All-call forwarding overrides the desk line's own voicemail.
  • Conditional (busy/no-answer) forwarding is not verified for every carrier or product, so confirm with your provider before counting on it.
  • Google Voice explicitly does not support forwarding its calls to an automated system.

When diverting to your cell is not enough

Forwarding solves location, not availability. It assumes you can answer every call that reaches your mobile, which is rarely true for an owner who is also doing the work. When your hands are full or the call comes in at night, the caller falls through to your personal voicemail, with no message summary, no booking, and no record.

An answering service fills that gap. With AllDayDesk, you keep your existing business number and forward calls to it; the service answers around the clock using your saved business information, takes messages when it does not know an answer or price, and can book new appointments on the built-in dashboard calendar once you have set your services and availability. Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings show up in your dashboard, and an optional Google Calendar connection can be authorized in Settings. Changes to existing appointments come to you as requests rather than confirmed edits.

Transfers to you are also possible: you configure a destination and the rules for when calls hand off to you, though pickup is not guaranteed since it depends on your phone.

How to decide: forward to mobile, answering service, or both

Use this quick framework to pick the right setup for how you actually work.

If you are reachable most of the day and just need calls to follow you around the shop or job site, plain forwarding to your mobile is the simplest and cheapest option. Set no-answer or busy forwarding rather than all-call forwarding so the desk phone still rings when you are there.

If you regularly miss calls while working, or you want nights and weekends covered without handing out your personal cell number, add an answering service. Forward your line to the service during hours you choose, and it answers in your business's voice, takes messages, and books appointments.

You can also combine both: conditional forwarding to your cell during work hours, and the same line forwarded to AllDayDesk after hours or when you are unavailable. Because forwarding is just a setting on your line, you can change the destination anytime.

  • Choose plain forwarding if you can answer nearly every call yourself.
  • Choose an answering service if missed calls mean missed work and you want messages and bookings captured.
  • Combine both by forwarding to your cell when free and to the service when not.
  • Check your provider's forwarding charges before leaving it on permanently.

More questions, answered

Does forwarding to my mobile change my business number?

No. Callers still dial your regular business landline number. The carrier simply routes the call to your cell, so your listings and advertising stay the same.

Can I forward only calls I miss instead of every call?

Often yes, through no-answer or busy forwarding, but support varies by provider and product. Some services only publish all-call codes, so confirm the conditional option with your carrier before relying on it.

Will my desk phone still ring when forwarding is on?

With all-call forwarding, no. Every call goes straight to the destination and the original line does not ring. With no-answer forwarding, the desk phone rings first and the call only moves if nobody picks up.

How do I turn forwarding off?

Dial the deactivate code from the same line (commonly *73) or switch the setting off in your provider's online account or app, depending on which product you have. Test with an outside call afterward to confirm calls ring at the desk again.

Can AllDayDesk receive my forwarded landline calls?

Yes. You keep your public number and forward calls to AllDayDesk using the setup instructions for your phone service. The service answers using your saved business information, and you can hear a personalized sample before choosing your phone setup.

Does forwarding work with Google Voice?

Google Voice can forward calls to linked phone numbers, but Google states that forwarding from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so it is not a path for connecting a Voice number to an answering service.
