Business Phone Number Forwarding

Business phone number forwarding means sending calls that arrive at your business number to a different phone, such as your cell phone, a teammate, or an answering service. You keep the same public number customers already know; the calls simply ring somewhere else. There are two main kinds: unconditional forwarding sends every call immediately, and conditional forwarding only sends calls when you are busy, do not answer, or the line is unreachable. Activation depends on your phone provider, so the first step is identifying exactly which service you have, then using that provider's own instructions. Forwarding is what lets you keep your existing business number when you connect a service like AllDayDesk, which answers calls around the clock using your saved business information.

What forwarding does and does not change

Forwarding changes where calls ring, not your phone number. Customers dial the same number they always have, and the phone network redirects the call to the destination you choose. Your printed materials, website, and listings stay the same.

Forwarding applies to calls, not text messages. On mobile lines, texts generally stay with the original device even when calls are forwarded.

There are two broad types to know before you set anything up:

  • Unconditional (all calls): every incoming call is sent to the destination immediately. Your original line does not ring first.
  • Conditional (no answer, busy, or unreachable): calls ring your line normally and only divert when you cannot pick up, you are on another call, or the phone is off or out of service.
  • Some providers also offer simultaneous ring or find me/follow me features that ring several numbers at once or in sequence.

How activation works: star codes, apps, and portals

There is no single universal code. Providers use short star codes, online dashboards, or mobile apps, and the exact product name on your bill matters. For example, AT&T's codes differ between its wireless, Phone for Business, and Collaborate products, and Comcast Business features depend on whether you have Voice Mobility, Business Voice, or VoiceEdge.

Typical patterns from published provider guides include:

  • Verizon mobile: *72 plus the 10-digit destination forwards all calls; *71 plus the destination forwards unanswered calls; *73 turns forwarding off. Set it up from the phone while in Verizon coverage.
  • Verizon business landline: dial *72 and follow the prompts to activate; *73 deactivates from the same line.
  • T-Mobile: **21*1 plus destination and # enables unconditional forwarding; **61*1 enables no-reply; **62*1 unreachable; **67*1 busy; ##004# resets to defaults.
  • AT&T Phone for Business: *72, destination, # for all calls; *92 for no answer; *90 for busy, with matching off codes.
  • Spectrum Business Voice: sign in at SpectrumBusiness.net, open Voice, choose the number, and use Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager to enable and disable forwarding.
  • Optimum Business Phone: dial *72, wait for dial tone, then dial the destination; *73 turns it off. Features in My Optimum Voice also manage forwarding.
  • Vonage Business Communications: select Call Forwarding in the admin interface and enable forwarding to a phone number.

Choosing between forwarding everything and forwarding only missed calls

The right type depends on how you want to use your phone. If you want another service or person to handle all calls, unconditional forwarding is the simple choice, but remember that all-call forwarding prevents calls from reaching the original line at all. If you mostly answer your own phone and only want help when you cannot pick up, conditional forwarding keeps your normal workflow and diverts the rest.

A practical way to decide:

  • Answer your own phone during the day? Use conditional (no-answer or busy) forwarding so you keep first chance at every call.
  • Want calls handled while you are on jobs, in appointments, or after hours? Unconditional forwarding to an answering service covers the whole day.
  • Need both? Some owners forward unconditionally during set hours and turn it off afterward, or rely on conditional forwarding outside those hours.
  • Check whether forwarding overrides your voicemail. With all-call forwarding active, your own voicemail will not catch calls.

Keeping your number when you use an answering service

You do not need a new number to use an answering service like AllDayDesk. You keep your public business number and forward calls to the service. Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it found, and hearing a personalized sample of how your calls would be answered. The sample is a preview only and creates no real booking.

After that, you choose phone setup, and the forwarding instructions depend on your phone service, since each provider activates forwarding differently. Once connected, calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings appear in your dashboard. New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk calendar by default once you have configured your services and availability, and an optional Google Calendar connection is available in Settings after you connect and authorize your account. Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests, not confirmed changes.

When callers ask something the service cannot answer, such as an unknown price or availability, it takes a message for you. If you want certain calls passed to you directly, transfers require you to configure a destination and rules, and a pickup is not guaranteed.

  • Identify your exact phone product before following any forwarding instructions.
  • Test with a real call from another phone after activating, and note the code to turn forwarding off.
  • Forwarding charges can depend on your plan, so check with your provider if you forward to long-distance numbers.

Limits and things to check first

Forwarding is not guaranteed on every line or plan. Some services support it only in select areas or on select handsets, and reseller or prepaid plans may not support conditional forwarding at all. Google Voice is a notable exception: Google explicitly states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so a Voice number is not a suitable source line for an automated answering service.

Before you rely on forwarding:

  • Confirm the exact product name on your bill or account, since instructions differ even within one provider.
  • Verify that your plan includes the type of forwarding you want, especially conditional forwarding.
  • Check whether your provider charges for forwarded calls, particularly to long-distance destinations.
  • Confirm the destination number is correct, then place a test call from an outside phone.

More questions, answered

Will callers know my calls are being forwarded?

No. Callers dial your normal business number and the network redirects the call. What they hear next depends on the destination, such as you, your voicemail, or an answering service greeting.

Does forwarding also forward my text messages?

No. On mobile lines, forwarding applies to calls only; texts stay with the original device.

How do I turn forwarding off?

Most providers use a matching off code, commonly *73 for star-code services, or the same portal or app setting you used to enable it. Use the disable instruction from your own provider's guide for the exact product you have.

Can I forward a Google Voice number to an answering service?

Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported. If you use Google Voice, contact Google support about your options rather than relying on forwarding to an automated service.

What happens to my own voicemail when forwarding is on?

With all-call forwarding active, calls never reach your original line, so your own voicemail will not pick up. With conditional forwarding, your voicemail may still catch calls depending on how your provider sequences it, so confirm the behavior with your provider.
