Call Forwarding Business Line: How It Works and Your Options
Call forwarding on a business line sends incoming calls to a different number, such as your cell phone, a coworker, or an answering service. There are two main types: unconditional forwarding, which sends every call immediately, and conditional forwarding, which only sends calls when the line is busy, unanswered, or unreachable. Most business phone providers support forwarding through a star code like *72, a web dashboard, or both, but the exact steps depend on your specific carrier and product. You keep your existing business number; callers dial it as usual and the network routes the call elsewhere. Forwarding works for calls only, not texts, and some plans charge for forwarded minutes. If you want calls handled rather than just moved, you can forward the line to an answering service such as AllDayDesk, which answers around the clock using your saved business information and shows calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings in a dashboard.

What call forwarding does to a business line
Call forwarding is a phone network feature that redirects a call from your published business number to another destination before it rings at your desk. The caller still dials the number they know, so your advertising, website, and listings stay unchanged. Forwarding happens at the carrier level, which means it works whether your business line is a landline, a fiber voice product, or a hosted business phone system.
Forwarding applies to calls, not text messages. It also changes where the call originates from the carrier's perspective, so some plans bill forwarded minutes differently than normal inbound calls. Check your plan before leaving forwarding on permanently.
- Your business number stays the same for callers
- Calls are redirected; texts are not
- Forwarded minutes may be billed differently depending on your plan
- Setup is usually done from the business line itself or an online account portal

Unconditional vs conditional forwarding
Unconditional forwarding, sometimes called all-call or immediate forwarding, sends every incoming call to the destination right away. Your desk phone never rings. This is the simplest option and the one most owners use when they want an answering service or a cell phone to handle everything.
Conditional forwarding only diverts calls in specific situations: when the line is busy, when nobody answers after a set number of rings, or when the phone is off or out of service. This lets you answer your own calls during business hours and let a backup catch the rest. Not every carrier or plan supports every conditional option, so confirm with your provider before relying on it.
One practical note: all-call forwarding usually overrides voicemail on the original line, since the call never reaches it. If you switch between forwarding modes, test where unanswered calls actually land.
- Unconditional (all calls): every call forwards immediately
- No-answer: forwards only after rings go unanswered
- Busy: forwards while you are already on a call
- Unreachable: forwards when the phone is off or out of range
- All-call forwarding typically overrides the original line's voicemail

How forwarding is activated on common business services
The activation method depends on your exact carrier and product, not just the brand. Two products from the same company can use different steps. On Verizon business landline service, dial *72 from the line and follow the activation instructions; *73 deactivates it. On Verizon mobile, *72 plus the 10-digit destination enables all-call forwarding, *71 handles unanswered calls, and *73 disables forwarding, and setup must be done from the phone while in coverage. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72, destination, # for all calls, *92 for no-answer, and *90 for busy, each turned off with the matching code, while AT&T Collaborate uses a different set, so identify your product first.
Comcast Business manages forwarding through My Account or the Comcast Business App under Voice Mobility, though features depend on what you subscribe to. Spectrum Business Voice uses the SpectrumBusiness.net portal: open Voice, pick the number, and set forwarding in Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager. Vonage Business Communications lets you select Call Forwarding and forward to a phone number from the dashboard.
Optimum Business Phone uses *72 followed by the destination, with *73 to turn it off, and forwarding can also be managed in My Optimum Voice. Frontier Digital Voice uses *72 with a confirmation tone, and also offers Find Me/Follow Me and Simultaneous Ring on some products. Windstream OfficeSuite UC handles forwarding through the WE Connect dashboard rather than star codes.
If your provider is not listed here, the safest path is to search your provider's name plus your exact product name and 'call forwarding,' or call their business support line. Do not borrow another carrier's codes; they often will not work and can silently fail.
- Star codes (*72/*73 pattern) are common on landlines but vary by product
- Hosted and cloud systems usually use a web dashboard or app instead
- Mobile carriers often require setup from the handset itself
- Always verify the destination with a real outside test call

Choosing where your business line forwards
The destination you pick determines what callers experience. Forwarding to your cell phone is free to set up and keeps calls personal, but it ties your availability to your own schedule. If you are on another call, driving, or asleep, the caller still gets voicemail.
Forwarding to an answering service shifts the call to a system built to handle it. AllDayDesk, for example, answers around the clock using business information you save, takes messages when it does not know an answer or price, and can book appointments once you have configured your services and availability in the dashboard. You keep your public number and simply forward the line to the service. Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings all appear in your dashboard afterward.
A middle path is conditional forwarding: answer your own calls when you can, and let the service catch busy, unanswered, and after-hours calls. This works well for solo owners who handle most calls themselves but cannot always pick up.
- Cell phone: simple and personal, but limited by your availability
- Answering service: calls are handled, messages taken, appointments booked in the dashboard calendar
- Conditional setup: you answer first, the service catches the rest
- Existing appointment changes through the service are requests for you to approve, not confirmed changes

Forwarding your line to AllDayDesk
AllDayDesk answers business calls around the clock using the business information you save, and setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it found, and hearing a personalized sample call. The sample is a demonstration and creates no real booking. After that, you choose your phone setup option, which depends on your phone service, since forwarding instructions differ by carrier.
You keep your existing public number. You forward it to AllDayDesk using your provider's own forwarding method, and callers reach the receptionist instead of ringing unanswered. If a caller asks something the service does not know, such as a price or an answer not in your saved information, it takes a message instead of guessing. Transfers to you require you to configure a destination and rules, and a pickup is not guaranteed.
Everything the service handles shows up in your dashboard: calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings. New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk calendar by default once your services and availability are configured, and an optional Google Calendar connection is available in Settings after you connect and authorize your Google account.
- Keep your public number; forward it with your carrier's own method
- Setup: pick your business or website, confirm details, hear a sample, choose phone setup
- Unknown answers and prices become messages, not guesses
- Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings are visible in the dashboard

More questions, answered
Does call forwarding change my business phone number?
No. Callers keep dialing your existing number. The carrier simply redirects the call to the destination you set, so your signage, listings, and advertising stay valid.
Will forwarded calls still reach my voicemail?
With all-call forwarding, the original line usually never rings, so its voicemail does not pick up. With conditional forwarding, voicemail behavior depends on how your provider sequences rings and forwarding, so test an unanswered call after you activate.
Can I forward texts too?
Standard call forwarding covers calls only, not text messages. If you need messages handled, check whether your carrier or phone system offers a separate feature for them.
What if my carrier is not listed on this page?
Search your provider's support site using your exact product name plus 'call forwarding,' or call their business support line. Codes and portals differ between products from the same company, so do not reuse another service's instructions.
Can I forward a Google Voice number to an answering service?
Google states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so this path is not a reliable option. Use a standard business line or mobile number for forwarding instead.
