AI phone answering for your business
An out of hours call service answers your business phone during the times you are not available, such as evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Callers reach a receptionist instead of a ringing phone or voicemail, and the service takes messages, answers common questions using your saved business information, and can book appointments. With AllDayDesk, you keep your existing phone number by forwarding calls to the service, and you can review every call, transcript, summary and booking in your dashboard. This page explains how out of hours coverage works, what it can and cannot do, and how to set it up.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
Most owners answer their own phone during the day. The gap is what happens after you close: a customer calls at 8 pm, on a Sunday, or on a holiday, and nobody picks up. An out of hours call service covers exactly those windows. Calls that arrive outside your working hours are handled by a receptionist that follows instructions you set in advance.
AllDayDesk is an AI receptionist that answers using the business information you save, such as your services, hours and pricing. It can answer questions, take detailed messages, and book new appointments. You keep your public phone number, so customers dial the same number they always have. You simply forward calls to AllDayDesk during the hours you want covered, and forward them back to yourself during the day if you prefer to answer in person.
An out of hours service is a supplement to you, not a replacement for judgment on urgent matters. AllDayDesk answers questions from your saved information, collects caller details, and books new appointments into your calendar. If a caller asks something you have not saved, or requests a price or time the service cannot confirm, it takes a message so you can follow up.
Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests, not confirmed changes, so nothing on your schedule moves without your approval. Transfers to you or another number only happen if you configure a destination and rules for them, and a transfer is not guaranteed to connect or get an immediate response. AllDayDesk is not an emergency dispatch service and does not provide medical, legal or financial advice to callers.
Setup starts with your business, not your phone. You choose your business or enter its website, check that the details AllDayDesk found are correct, and hear a personalized sample of how your calls would be answered. The sample is a preview only and creates no real booking. Once it sounds right, you choose your phone setup option.
Keeping your number works through call forwarding, and the instructions depend on who provides your phone service. Many mobile and landline carriers use star codes. For example, Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the destination number for all-call forwarding and *73 to turn it off, while T-Mobile uses **21*1 followed by the number and # for unconditional forwarding. Business VoIP products often manage forwarding in a web portal instead, such as Spectrum Business Voice through its Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager. Check your own provider's guide, because codes differ between products from the same company.
One important exception: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls to an automated system, so a Google Voice number cannot be forwarded to AllDayDesk. If you use Google Voice, you would need a different phone line as your public number.

New appointments booked while you are out of hours go to the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default. This works once you have configured your services and availability, so the receptionist knows what can be booked and when. You can also connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account, which is an optional extra for owners who keep their schedule there.
Every call leaves a record either way. Transcripts, summaries and bookings appear in your dashboard, so the first thing you see each morning is exactly what happened overnight or over the weekend.
You have three realistic ways to handle calls when you are off the clock, and the right one depends on your call volume and how much each missed call costs you.
Voicemail is free and already on your phone, but callers get no answers and no booking. A human answering service staffs real people around the clock; for example, Ruby advertises live virtual receptionist plans starting at $245 per month, and Smith.ai uses per-call pricing for its human receptionist service, so actual costs depend on the quote, included allowance and hours. An AI receptionist like AllDayDesk answers from your saved business information, with plans that include a set number of minutes and a per-minute rate beyond that, so your bill scales with how long calls run.
A fair way to decide: if your after-hours calls need human judgment on complex matters, a human service may fit better. If most after-hours callers want hours, prices, or to book a visit, an AI receptionist handles those well and takes messages for the rest. Note that AllDayDesk is this site's own product, and this comparison is based on documented features and published prices rather than hands-on testing.
