AI phone answering for your business
An overflow call handling service takes the calls your main business line can't get to — when you're already on the phone, on a job, or simply can't reach the phone in time. Instead of those callers hitting voicemail, they forward to an answering service that picks up with your business information, takes a message, and can book appointments. AllDayDesk is an AI receptionist that handles overflow calls around the clock using the details you save about your business. You keep your existing phone number: you set up conditional forwarding on your phone service so that busy or unanswered calls route to AllDayDesk, while calls you do answer stay with you. Setup involves choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it found, hearing a personalized sample, and choosing how to connect your phone. Forwarding steps depend on your carrier, and not every phone service supports busy or no-answer forwarding, so it's worth confirming with your provider first.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
Overflow is different from full-time answering. With overflow coverage, your main line stays your main line. You answer calls when you can, and only the ones you can't get to — busy signals and rings that go unanswered — get passed along. This is usually done with a feature called conditional call forwarding, sometimes labeled busy/no-answer forwarding.
The alternative is unconditional forwarding, which sends every call to the service all the time. That's a better fit when you never want to answer your own phone. Overflow is the right model when you mostly answer your own phone and just want a backup for the moments you can't.

You keep your public phone number. The work happens in your phone service's settings, where you enable forwarding for busy or unanswered calls and enter your AllDayDesk number as the destination. The exact steps depend on who provides your phone service, and some services don't support conditional forwarding at all — in that case your options are all-call forwarding or checking with your provider about feature availability.
A few verified examples of how carriers handle this: T-Mobile uses **67*1 followed by the destination and # for busy calls, and **61*1 plus destination # for no-answer calls. Verizon mobile uses *71 plus the destination for unanswered calls. AT&T Phone for Business uses *92 for no-answer and *90 for busy. Spectrum Business Voice manages busy/no-answer forwarding through its online Voice Settings rather than star codes. Always confirm the exact product name on your account first — carriers often use different codes for wireless, landline, and hosted business products.

When a call reaches AllDayDesk, the AI receptionist answers using the business information you saved during setup. It can answer questions about your services, take a message, and book new appointments. New bookings go to the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you've configured your services and availability. If you prefer, you can connect Google Calendar in Settings after authorizing your account — that connection is optional.
When the caller asks something the receptionist doesn't have an answer for — an unknown price, a question about an existing appointment, anything outside your saved details — it takes a message instead of guessing. Changes to existing appointments are passed to you as requests, not confirmed changes, so you stay in control of your schedule. You can see calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings in your dashboard.
One important limit: if you configure call transfers to reach you directly, you'll need to set up a destination and rules for when transfers happen. A transfer isn't guaranteed to connect — the caller may reach your voicemail or no one at all, so configure transfer rules with that in mind.
The right choice depends on how often you actually answer your own phone. If you're at a desk most of the day and pick up regularly, overflow coverage means you only pay for the calls you would have missed. If you're rarely able to answer — you're on job sites, in appointments, or working solo — unconditional forwarding to a service may serve you better than a backup that rarely triggers.
Cost is another factor. AllDayDesk plans include a set number of minutes per month, with a per-minute rate for extra usage, so overflow usage tends to be lower and more predictable than full-time answering. Human answering services exist as well; their pricing and coverage vary by provider and plan, so compare current quotes directly. Our comparison guide walks through AI versus human receptionists in more detail, including what each does beyond phone answering.

Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website. AllDayDesk checks the details it finds, you confirm they're accurate, and you hear a personalized sample of how the receptionist would sound for your business. The sample is a demonstration — it doesn't create a real booking. Then you choose your phone setup and follow your carrier's forwarding instructions to route busy and unanswered calls.
Because forwarding is the one step that depends on your phone service, plan for it: confirm your service supports conditional forwarding, note the right codes or portal steps for your exact product, and test both the busy path and the no-answer path before relying on it.

Each plan includes call minutes. Extra minutes cost more. See your estimate before you start. Your first 30 calls are free, with no credit card. Paid plans are monthly; cancel anytime.
Forwarding happens at the phone network level before the call reaches AllDayDesk, so callers dial your regular business number as usual. What they experience is the receptionist answering instead of a ring-out or voicemail.
Some services only support forwarding all calls, and some plans don't include conditional forwarding at all. Check with your provider about what your specific plan supports. If only unconditional forwarding is available, you can still use AllDayDesk, but every call would route to it rather than just the ones you miss.
Google explicitly states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so this isn't a workable path. You'd need to route calls from a phone line that supports forwarding to AllDayDesk directly.
New appointments go to the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you've set up your services and availability. You can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account.
It takes a message rather than guessing. You'll see the message, along with the call transcript and summary, in your dashboard.
AllDayDesk is available around the clock, but availability isn't a guarantee that every call connects. For details on capacity and how the service performs under load, hear the sample for your own business during setup.
Enter your business details, check what it finds, and listen to a personalized sample built from your own services and information. If it sounds like the backup your busy line needs, choose your phone setup and start routing the calls you can't get to.
