AI phone answering for your business
A phone answering service business takes calls on behalf of another business, so the owner can keep working instead of stopping to pick up. AllDayDesk is an AI receptionist that answers your business calls around the clock using the information you save about your business. You keep your existing number by forwarding calls to the service, and calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings show up in your dashboard.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
When you hire a phone answering service business, you are paying someone else to pick up the calls you cannot take. For a solo owner, that is most of the day: you are under a sink, on a roof, or with a client, and the phone keeps ringing. The service answers in your business's name, answers questions using the details you saved, takes messages when it does not know an answer, and can book new appointments.
AllDayDesk does this with an AI receptionist rather than a call center of people. It answers around the clock using your saved business information, so a caller at 9 p.m. gets the same accurate answers about your services and prices as a caller at 10 a.m. When a caller asks something you have not saved, or wants a price or appointment time the system does not know, it takes a message instead of guessing.
What the receptionist does is visible to you. Calls show up in your dashboard with a transcript, a summary, and any appointment that was booked, so you can review what was promised and call people back with full context.
Setup starts with your business, not with paperwork. You choose your business from a lookup or enter its website, and AllDayDesk pulls together what it can find: your services, your service area, your hours, and anything else you have published. You then check those details and correct anything that is wrong or missing, because the receptionist will only be as accurate as the information you approve.
Next, you hear a personalized sample of the receptionist speaking for your business. This is a demo, not a real booking, so nothing gets scheduled and no caller is involved. It exists so you can judge the tone and the answers before any real caller reaches it.
Once the sample sounds right, you choose your phone setup. That is the step where your existing number starts reaching the service.
You do not change your phone number to use AllDayDesk. You keep the number your customers already know and forward calls to the service. How you forward depends on your phone carrier or phone system, and the instructions differ by provider.
As an example of how carrier-specific this is: Verizon mobile users activate all-call forwarding by dialing *72 plus the 10-digit destination from the phone itself, and *73 turns it off. T-Mobile uses codes like **21*1 followed by the destination and # for unconditional forwarding. Comcast Business, Spectrum Business Voice, Vonage Business Communications and other providers manage forwarding through their own portals or codes, and the exact steps depend on which product you subscribe to. Check your provider's own instructions before entering anything.
One important limit: Google Voice does not support forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system, so a Google Voice line is not a compatible path to AllDayDesk. If you use Google Voice, you would need a different phone line to forward from.

New appointments booked by the receptionist go on the built-in AllDayDesk dashboard calendar by default, once you have configured your services and availability. If you already run your schedule in Google Calendar, you can optionally connect your Google account in Settings and authorize the connection, and the service will work with that calendar instead of or alongside the built-in one.
Changes to existing appointments work differently from new bookings. When a caller wants to move or cancel an existing appointment, the receptionist records that as a request for you to review, rather than confirming the change on its own. You stay in control of your current schedule.
Transfers to you are also available when you want to take a call yourself. You configure a transfer destination and the rules for when transfers happen. Because transfers depend on your phone being reachable, neither pickup nor an immediate response is guaranteed, so the service also takes ordinary messages for anything you need to handle later.
AllDayDesk is one option among several, and the right choice depends on your budget and how you want calls handled. Human virtual receptionist services, such as Ruby (plans advertised from $245 per month as of October 2026) and Smith.ai's live receptionist plans, staff your calls with people. Their costs depend on the plan, included allowance, overages and contract terms, so compare current quotes rather than headline prices. An in-house receptionist, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, does far more than answer phones, including greeting visitors and office tasks, so a phone service is not a full replacement for that role.
Voicemail is the free baseline, but some callers will not leave a message, and you may find out hours later. An AI receptionist like AllDayDesk sits between those options: it answers around the clock, uses your saved business details, and books appointments. Pricing differs across service types, so compare current plans rather than assuming one is cheaper. Note that some competitors, like Smith.ai, also offer their own AI receptionist product with escalation to live agents, which is a different feature set from AllDayDesk's.
This comparison is based on documented features and published prices, not hands-on testing of each service.
