Business Phone Call Forwarding: How It Works and Your Options
Business phone call forwarding sends calls that come in on your business number to another phone, such as your cell phone, a teammate's line, or an answering service. There are two main kinds: unconditional forwarding, which sends every call right away, and conditional forwarding, which only sends calls when the line is busy, no one answers, or the phone is unreachable. How you turn it on depends on your phone provider. Some use star codes like *72 from the phone itself, while others use an online account portal. Before you set anything up, identify the exact service name on your bill, because steps differ between a carrier's wireless, landline, and hosted voice products. Once forwarding is on, test it with a real call from another phone, and remember to turn it off when you no longer need it.

What Call Forwarding Does for a Business Line
Call forwarding redirects an incoming call from your published business number to a different destination. The caller still dials the number they know; the phone network simply routes the call somewhere else before it rings at your desk. This lets you keep one public number while answering wherever it is convenient.
Forwarding is different from call transferring. Forwarding is set up in advance so calls never ring at the original line (or only ring there under certain conditions). Transferring happens during a live call, when someone already on the phone hands the call off. Forwarding is also different from a second phone line: you are not buying a new number, you are redirecting the one you have.
- The caller keeps dialing your normal business number.
- The destination can be a cell phone, another office line, or an answering service.
- Forwarding is configured ahead of time; transferring happens during a call.
- Text messages are usually not forwarded, only calls.

The Two Main Types: Unconditional and Conditional
Unconditional (all-call) forwarding sends every incoming call straight to the destination. Your desk phone does not ring at all. This is useful when you are closed, out of the office, or want another service to handle everything.
Conditional forwarding only redirects calls under specific conditions. The usual conditions are: the line is busy while you are on another call, no one answers after a set number of rings, or the phone is off or out of service. Conditional forwarding is the common choice when you want to answer your own calls during business hours but catch the ones you miss.
One thing to know: on many landline services, all-call forwarding overrides voicemail on the original line, because the calls never reach it. If you switch to unconditional forwarding, your old voicemail stops catching messages until you turn forwarding off.
- Unconditional: every call forwards immediately; the original line does not ring.
- Busy: forwards only while you are already on a call.
- No answer: forwards after the phone rings a set number of times.
- Unreachable: forwards when the phone is off or out of coverage.
- All-call forwarding often overrides the original line's voicemail.

How Activation Works: Star Codes and Portals
There is no single universal code. Each provider publishes its own steps, and even one carrier can use different steps for its wireless, landline, and hosted business products. Always match the instructions to the exact service name on your bill.
Star-code examples from published provider guides: Verizon mobile uses *72 plus the 10-digit destination for all-call forwarding and *73 to turn it off, with *71 for unanswered calls. T-Mobile uses **21*1 plus the destination and # for unconditional forwarding, with separate codes for no-reply, unreachable, and busy conditions. AT&T Phone for Business uses *72, destination, # for all calls, *92 for no answer, and *90 for busy. Comcast Managed Voice on a Panasonic TPA65 handset uses *72 plus destination, with *92 for no answer and *90 for busy. Optimum Business Phone uses *72, wait for dial tone, then the destination, and confirms with a second dial tone or the destination answering.
Other providers manage forwarding through an online account instead of, or in addition to, codes. Spectrum Business Voice is configured by signing in to SpectrumBusiness.net, opening Voice, choosing the phone number, and using Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager to pick unconditional or busy/no-answer forwarding. Vonage Business Communications has a Call Forwarding setting where you enable forwarding to a phone number. Windstream OfficeSuite UC uses a Call Forwarding widget in the WE Connect dashboard, where you can also set the number of rings before unanswered calls forward.
After activating, verify with a real call from a different phone. Vonage specifically recommends confirming the destination with an outside call, and Optimum treats the destination answering as confirmation that forwarding is active.
- Identify your exact service name from your bill before using any instructions.
- Wireless, landline, and hosted products from the same carrier can use different codes.
- Common pattern: *72 plus destination to enable, *73 to disable.
- Portal-based providers: Spectrum Business Voice, Vonage Business Communications, Windstream OfficeSuite UC.
- Test with an outside call after activation, and disable with the matching code or portal setting when done.

Forwarding a Business Line to a Cell Phone
A very common setup is forwarding a business landline to a personal cell phone. The mechanics are the same as any forwarding: activate from the business line (or the provider's portal) with the cell number as the destination. Some mobile providers require setup to be done from the phone itself while in coverage, as Verizon notes for its mobile service.
Before relying on this, check a few practical points. Confirm whether your plan charges for forwarded minutes, since charges depend on the plan. Decide whether you want all calls forwarded or only the ones you miss, and choose unconditional or conditional forwarding accordingly. And remember that when every call forwards to your cell, you are the only person who can answer, which is where an answering option becomes useful.
- Activate from the business line or portal, using your cell number as the destination.
- Some mobile carriers require setup from the phone while in coverage.
- Check whether your plan charges for forwarded call minutes.
- Conditional forwarding lets you answer during the day and catch missed calls.

Forwarding to an Answering Service or AI Receptionist
Instead of forwarding to another phone you carry, you can forward to a service that answers on your behalf. With AllDayDesk, you keep your public number and forward calls to us; we answer around the clock using the business information you save. Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details we found, hearing a personalized sample, and then choosing your phone setup based on your provider's forwarding instructions.
Two limits worth knowing up front. Google Voice numbers cannot be forwarded to an automated system like this; Google explicitly does not support that routing. And if you use conditional forwarding so you still answer during the day, the service only receives the calls that meet your forwarding conditions, such as busy or no-answer.
Once calls reach the service, calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings appear in your dashboard. New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk calendar by default once you have configured your services and availability, with an optional Google Calendar connection available in Settings after you connect and authorize your account. If a caller asks something the service does not know, such as a price or an open slot, it takes a message instead of guessing.
- You keep your existing public number and forward calls to the service.
- Google Voice forwarding to an automated system is not supported by Google.
- Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings show in the dashboard.
- Built-in calendar by default; optional Google Calendar connection in Settings.
- Unknown answers, prices, or slots become messages for you.

Choosing a Setup: A Simple Decision Framework
The right forwarding setup depends on who can answer and when. Use these questions to decide.
First, who answers your calls today? If you are the only one who answers, unconditional forwarding to a cell works while you are out, but missed calls still go nowhere unless something else catches them. Second, do you want to answer some calls yourself? If yes, use conditional forwarding (busy and no-answer) so you keep first chance at every call. Third, what happens to calls you miss? If the answer is 'they hear my voicemail and some never call back,' forwarding the missed ones to an answering option is worth considering. Fourth, does your provider support the condition you need? Conditional forwarding is not available on every line or plan, so confirm with your carrier before counting on it.
A common pattern for a one-person business: forward busy and no-answer calls to an answering service during work hours, and forward all calls to it after hours. You stay reachable for the calls you want, and the rest get answered with a message or a booking instead of a beep.
- Answer everything yourself? Unconditional forwarding to your cell is simplest.
- Want first chance at calls? Use busy and no-answer conditional forwarding.
- Missing calls after hours? Forward all calls to an answering option when closed.
- Confirm conditional forwarding is supported on your specific line and plan first.

More questions, answered
Does call forwarding cost extra?
It depends on your provider and plan. Verizon notes that charges for forwarded calls depend on the plan, and some providers treat forwarded minutes as billable. Check with your carrier before leaving forwarding on long term.
Will callers know their call was forwarded?
Usually not. The caller dials your normal business number and the network reroutes the call. They may notice a different greeting or voice if the destination is a cell phone or an answering service.
Can I forward calls remotely if I am not at the office?
Some providers offer remote activation or portal-based forwarding you can manage from anywhere, such as Spectrum Business Voice through its web portal. Star-code activation usually must be done from the line itself, so check whether your service has a portal or app option.
Does forwarding also send text messages?
No. Forwarding applies to calls. Verizon, for example, states that its forwarding covers calls only, not texts.
Why did my voicemail stop working after I turned on forwarding?
With unconditional (all-call) forwarding, calls never reach the original line, so its voicemail never picks up. Frontier's Digital Voice guide notes that all-call forwarding overrides voicemail forwarding. Turn off forwarding or use conditional forwarding if you want voicemail to catch some calls.
