How to Forward Calls From Office Phone to Cell Phone

To forward calls from your office phone to your cell phone, you usually dial a short star code on the office line, then enter your cell number. For example, on many landline services you lift the handset, dial *72, wait for a dial tone, dial your 10-digit cell number, and listen for a confirmation tone. To turn forwarding off later, you dial *73 from the same line. The exact code depends on your phone provider and product, so confirm yours before activating. Some providers use a web dashboard or app instead of star codes, and some offer conditional forwarding that only sends calls when the desk phone is busy or unanswered. Always place a test call from another phone to make sure calls reach your cell before you rely on it.

Step 1: Identify your exact phone service

The single biggest mistake people make is using star codes that belong to a different product. Carriers sell several phone services, and the activation steps can differ even within the same company. Check your monthly bill or your provider's welcome email for the exact service name before you dial anything.

Ask yourself three questions: Is this a traditional landline, a cable or fiber voice line, or a cloud-hosted business phone? Is the line a desk phone at the office, or is the office number actually a mobile line? And does your plan include call forwarding at all? Some features must be added to a plan before they work.

  • Find the service name on your bill, not just the carrier name
  • Confirm call forwarding is included or enabled on your plan
  • Note whether you manage features by phone, web portal, or app
  • Write down the 10-digit cell number you want calls to reach

Step 2: Use the star code for your provider

For many landline and cable voice services, all-call forwarding uses *72 to turn on and *73 to turn off. The details vary, so here are the documented steps for several providers. These apply only to the named products.

Optimum Business Phone: lift the handset, dial *72, wait for a dial tone, then dial the destination. If the destination answers, forwarding is confirmed. If the call is busy or unanswered, press the flash or hook switch, dial *72 again, and redial the destination; two beeps and a dial tone confirm. Dial *73 to turn forwarding off. Frontier Unlimited Digital Voice: lift the handset, dial *72, wait for a second dial tone, enter the destination, and listen for a confirmation, then use *73 to disable. Keep in mind that all-call forwarding means your desk phone will not ring at all while it is active.

AT&T Phone for Business: dial *72, the destination, then # to forward all calls; dial *73# to turn it off. For no-answer forwarding, use *92 with the destination and #, and *93# to disable. For busy forwarding, use *90 with the destination and #, and *91# to disable. These codes are specific to this product and differ from AT&T wireless and AT&T Collaborate, where *72 plus the destination enables always forwarding and *73 disables it, *62 plus the destination enables busy forwarding with *63 to disable, and *92 plus the destination enables no-answer forwarding with *93 to disable. An administrator controls feature access on Collaborate.

Comcast Managed Voice (Panasonic TPA65 phones): lift the handset, dial *72 and the destination, then hang up to forward all calls; *73 disables. *92 with a destination sets no-answer forwarding and *93 disables it. Other Comcast Business products are managed through My Account or the Comcast Business App instead. Verizon business landline: dial *72 and follow the activation instructions; dial *73 from the same line to deactivate. This is all-call forwarding for the business line, which is a different product from Verizon wireless service.

  • Optimum Business Phone: *72 then destination; *73 to disable
  • Frontier Unlimited Digital Voice: *72, wait for second dial tone, destination; *73 to disable
  • AT&T Phone for Business: *72 destination # (all), *92 destination # (no answer), *90 destination # (busy)
  • Comcast Managed Voice TPA65: *72 then destination, hang up; *73 to disable
  • AT&T Collaborate: *72 (always), *62 (busy), *92 (no answer), with *73, *63, *93 to disable
  • Verizon business landline: *72 to activate, *73 to deactivate

Step 3: Or use your provider's portal or app

Cloud and hosted phone systems usually manage forwarding through a dashboard rather than star codes. Spectrum Business Voice, for example, has an account owner or administrator sign in to SpectrumBusiness.net, open Voice, choose the phone number, then Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager, and enable forwarding with a choice of all calls or busy/no-answer conditions.

Vonage Business Communications lets you select Call Forwarding and enable forwarding to a phone number. Windstream OfficeSuite UC uses the WE Connect Dashboard's My Call Forwarding widget, where you can set immediate forwarding to another phone number and choose how many rings before unanswered calls forward. Comcast Business customers can manage phone features through My Account or the Comcast Business App, depending on the subscribed services.

  • Spectrum Business Voice: SpectrumBusiness.net > Voice > phone number > Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager
  • Vonage Business Communications: select Call Forwarding, then forward calls to a phone number
  • Windstream OfficeSuite UC: WE Connect Dashboard > My Call Forwarding > Call Forwarding (Immediate) > Another Phone
  • Comcast Business: My Account or the Comcast Business App, depending on your services

All calls, or only missed ones?

There are two main forwarding styles. Unconditional (all-call) forwarding sends every incoming call straight to your cell, and the desk phone does not ring. Conditional forwarding only kicks in when the desk phone is busy, unanswered, or unreachable, so the office phone still rings first.

All-call forwarding is simplest, but it means anyone walking into the office cannot pick up the desk phone, and your cell number shows as the call destination. Conditional forwarding keeps the desk phone working during business hours and only catches calls you miss. Not every service supports every condition, and some carriers have not published conditional codes for all products, so ask your provider to confirm what your specific line supports before assuming it works.

If your office number is actually a mobile line, the codes are different. Verizon wireless, for example, uses *72 plus the destination for all calls, *71 plus the destination for unanswered calls, and *73 to disable, and setup must be done from the mobile phone while in coverage. T-Mobile wireless uses **21*1, destination, # for unconditional forwarding and ##21# to disable, with separate codes for no-reply, unreachable, and busy conditions.

  • Unconditional forwarding: every call goes to the cell; desk phone stays silent
  • Conditional forwarding: desk phone rings first; missed or busy calls go to the cell
  • Confirm conditional support for your exact product with your carrier
  • Mobile lines use different codes than landlines

Step 4: Test it and know how to turn it off

After activating, place a test call from a different phone, such as a coworker's cell, to the office number. Confirm it rings on your cell and that the caller ID looks the way you expect. If you set conditional forwarding, let the desk phone ring past the set number of rings and confirm the call still reaches you.

Remember to deactivate when you no longer need it, usually with *73 from the same line or the same portal toggle you used to turn it on. Leaving all-call forwarding on by accident means the desk phone will keep staying silent, and any feature that depends on the office line ringing will not work as expected.

  • Test from a phone other than your own cell
  • Verify voicemail behavior on both lines after forwarding
  • Turn forwarding off with *73 or the same portal control
  • Re-test after any change to your phone service or plan

When forwarding to your cell is not enough

Forwarding to your cell works well when you can answer, but it has limits. Every call rings your personal phone, including spam and after-hours calls, and if you are on another call, in a meeting, or out of range, the caller goes to your personal voicemail with no record in any business system.

An answering service takes a different approach: calls are answered for you, messages and details are captured, and you check them when you are free. AllDayDesk, this site's product, answers calls around the clock using your saved business information. You keep your existing public number by forwarding calls to it, using the same star codes or portal steps covered above. Setup involves choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details, hearing a personalized sample, and choosing your phone setup. Calls, transcripts, summaries, and bookings show up in your dashboard, and new appointments go on the built-in calendar once you have configured your services and availability, with an optional Google Calendar connection available in Settings after you connect and authorize your account.

  • Forwarding sends every call to your personal phone, day and night
  • Missed forwarded calls land in your personal voicemail with no business record
  • An answering service answers for you and captures messages you can review
  • AllDayDesk keeps your existing number; you just forward calls to it

More questions, answered

Will my desk phone still ring when forwarding is on?

With all-call forwarding, no. Calls go straight to your cell and the desk phone stays silent. With conditional forwarding, the desk phone rings first, and calls only forward when it is busy or unanswered.

Does forwarding cost extra?

It depends on your provider and plan. Some carriers note that charges depend on your plan, and forwarding to a number outside your calling area may count as long distance. Check with your provider before activating.

Can I forward my Google Voice number to my cell or to an answering service?

Google Voice can forward calls to linked phone numbers, but Google explicitly states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported. Check Google's current documentation before relying on any setup.

What if my carrier is not listed here?

Look up your exact service name on your bill, then search that provider's support pages for that product's forwarding instructions. Codes differ between products from the same carrier, so do not substitute another carrier's codes.

Can I set up forwarding remotely when I am not at the office?

Some hosted systems let you manage forwarding from a web dashboard or app from anywhere. Traditional star-code activation usually must be done from the line itself. Check whether your service offers remote or portal-based forwarding.
