How to Forward Office Phone to Cell Phone

To forward your office phone to a cell phone, first find out which company and service your desk phone uses, because the steps are different for each one. On many landline and business phone services, you lift the handset, dial *72, then dial your 10-digit cell number and wait for a confirmation tone or message. To turn forwarding off later, you dial *73 from the same line. Some services use different codes (*92 for no-answer, *90 for busy) or a web portal instead. Always confirm the exact steps for your own service with your provider, then place a test call from another phone to check that calls reach your cell.

Before you start: identify your phone service

The single most common mistake is using star codes that belong to a different product. A code that works on a Verizon mobile phone will not work on a Verizon business landline, and codes for one provider's hosted voice product may not work on another product from the same company. Look at your phone bill or your provider's welcome email and write down the exact service name, such as 'AT&T Phone for Business', 'Spectrum Business Voice', or 'Frontier Unlimited Digital Voice'.

Also decide what kind of forwarding you want. All-call (unconditional) forwarding sends every incoming call straight to your cell, so the desk phone does not ring at all. Conditional forwarding only sends calls to your cell when the desk line is busy or does not answer, which lets the office phone keep working normally during open hours.

Finally, know that forwarding forwards calls, not text messages. If customers text your office line, those messages stay where they are.

  • Find the exact product name on your bill or provider account.
  • Choose all-call forwarding or conditional (busy / no-answer) forwarding.
  • Have your 10-digit cell number ready.
  • Plan a test call from a different phone after setup.
  • Ask your provider about any extra charges for forwarded calls before you activate.

Star code steps by provider

These are the activation steps published by each provider for its own service. Use only the row that matches your exact product. If your product is not listed here, call your provider instead of guessing a code.

Landline-style services (Verizon business landline, AT&T Phone for Business, Comcast Managed Voice, Optimum Business Phone, Frontier Unlimited Digital Voice, C Spire) generally use *72 plus the destination to forward all calls and *73 to disable. AT&T Phone for Business adds *92 with destination for no-answer and *90 with destination for busy (off with *93# and *91#), while Comcast Managed Voice uses *92/*93 for no-answer and *90/*91 for busy. Optimum asks you to press flash and redial *72 if the first try is busy or unanswered, and Frontier asks you to wait for a second dial tone before entering the destination.

Mobile and hosted services differ. Verizon mobile uses *72 for all calls and *71 for unanswered, set up from the mobile phone in Verizon coverage. T-Mobile uses **21*1 plus destination and # for all calls, **61*1 for no reply, **62*1 for unreachable, **67*1 for busy, with ## codes to disable and ##004# to reset. AT&T Collaborate uses *72/*73 for always, *62/*63 for busy and *92/*93 for no answer, with administrators controlling feature access. C Spire publishes only all-call *72/*73, so confirm conditional options with C Spire directly. Vonage Business Communications users instead select Call Forwarding in the account and enable Forward Calls to a phone number, then verify with an outside call.

  • Match the code to your exact product name, not just the brand.
  • Most landline services: *72 plus destination to activate, *73 to disable.
  • AT&T Phone for Business: *92 no-answer, *90 busy; Collaborate: *92 no-answer, *62 busy.
  • Verizon mobile: *72 all calls, *71 unanswered, from the phone itself.
  • T-Mobile: **21*1, **61*1, **62*1, **67*1 plus destination and #; ##004# resets.
  • Vonage Business Communications: enable forwarding in the account, then test with an outside call.
  • If your product is not listed, ask your provider rather than guessing a code.

Portal and app steps for hosted phone systems

Many modern business phone systems manage forwarding through a website or app rather than star codes. For Spectrum Business Voice, sign in to SpectrumBusiness.net with an account role allowed to manage voice, open Voice, choose your phone number, then Voice Settings or Forwarding Manager, enable forwarding, choose all calls or busy/no-answer, and set the destination. Disable it in the same place. (spectrum-business)

Comcast Business Voice Mobility includes call forwarding and remote call forwarding, managed through My Account or the Comcast Business app; available features depend on the services you subscribe to. (comcast)

Windstream OfficeSuite UC users can use the WE Connect Dashboard: open the My Call Forwarding widget, choose Call Forwarding (Immediate), select Another Phone, enter the 10-digit number and save. For unanswered calls, select the extension, choose the number of rings, then set another phone number as the destination. (windstream-officesuite)

Frontier also offers a portal path for Digital Voice: Settings, Call Settings, Call Forwarding, then enter the destination and choose all calls. If you cannot find these menus, your account may not include the feature or your user role may not have permission, so contact your provider's business support. (frontier-digital)

  • Spectrum Business Voice: portal-based, choose unconditional or busy/no-answer per number. (spectrum-business)
  • Comcast Voice Mobility: forwarding plus remote forwarding via My Account or app. (comcast)
  • Windstream OfficeSuite UC: dashboard widget with immediate and no-answer options. (windstream-officesuite)
  • Frontier Digital Voice: Settings, Call Settings, Call Forwarding in the portal. (frontier-digital)
  • Missing menus usually mean the feature is not on your account or your role lacks access.

Test the forwarding and manage it day to day

After activating, call your office number from a phone other than your cell. If your cell rings, forwarding is working. If it goes to your cell's voicemail instead, your cell may not have answered in time; check your cell's own ring and voicemail settings.

Remember what each mode does. With all-call forwarding on, the desk phone will not ring, and on some services forwarding overrides the desk line's voicemail. With conditional forwarding, the desk phone rings first and only overflow goes to your cell. Turn forwarding off with the matching deactivation code (*73 on most landline services) or the same portal control you used to turn it on.

If you forward to your cell and then cannot answer, callers hear your personal cell voicemail. Record a professional greeting on that phone that names your business, so callers know they reached the right place.

  • Test from a different phone, not your own cell.
  • All-call forwarding usually silences the desk phone and can override its voicemail.
  • Conditional forwarding keeps the desk phone ringing first.
  • Deactivate with *73 (or the matching code) or the same portal setting.
  • Record a business-named greeting on your cell for calls you miss.

When forwarding to your cell is not enough

Forwarding moves the call to you, which works well if you can pick up. It does not help when you are already on a job, driving, or asleep. At that point callers reach your cell's voicemail, and messages pile up until you can call back.

An answering service fills that gap. AllDayDesk, this site's product, answers calls around the clock using your saved business information. You keep your public office number and forward calls to it, using the same forwarding steps above. Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website, checking the details it found, hearing a personalized sample, and then choosing your phone setup. Calls, transcripts, summaries and bookings show up in your dashboard. New appointments go on the built-in AllDayDesk calendar once you have configured services and availability, and an optional Google Calendar connection is available in Settings after you connect and authorize your account. When the caller asks something AllDayDesk does not know, such as a price not on file, it takes a message instead of guessing. If you want a caller to reach you directly, you can configure transfers to a destination with your own rules.

If you are weighing options, human answering services such as Ruby, Smith.ai and AnswerConnect also exist, and their pricing and coverage vary by plan and quote. Compare what each option actually includes rather than assuming one type is always cheaper or always available longer.

  • Forwarding only works when you can answer the cell.
  • AllDayDesk answers around the clock using your saved business details.
  • You keep your existing public number by forwarding calls to it.
  • Transcripts, summaries and bookings appear in the dashboard; the sample call creates no real booking.
  • Unknown answers, prices or appointment times become messages for you.
  • Human services are a separate option with plan-based pricing and coverage.

More questions, answered

Can I forward my office phone to my cell remotely?

Some services support it. Comcast Business Voice Mobility includes remote call forwarding managed through My Account or the Comcast Business app, and hosted systems like Spectrum Business Voice and Windstream OfficeSuite UC let you change forwarding from a web dashboard. Traditional landline star codes generally must be dialed from the office line itself, so check with your provider about remote options for your exact product.

Will forwarded calls still show my office number?

Caller ID behavior depends on your provider and how the forwarding is set up. The reliable way to know is to place a test call from a third phone and see what appears on your cell. Ask your provider if caller ID presentation matters for your business.

Does forwarding work with Google Voice?

Google Voice can forward calls to linked phone numbers, but Google explicitly states that forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported. If your business line is a Google Voice number, confirm options with Google support before relying on it.

What is the difference between *72 and *92?

On services that use both, *72 turns on all-call forwarding so every call goes to your cell immediately, while *92 turns on no-answer forwarding so the desk phone rings first and only unanswered calls move to your cell. The exact meaning depends on your provider, so use the codes listed for your specific service.

Are there extra charges for forwarding calls?

Possibly. Forwarded calls can count as outgoing long-distance on some plans, and Verizon notes that charges depend on your plan. Ask your provider before leaving forwarding on permanently.
