AI phone answering for your business
Overflow call answering means a second answering service catches the calls that come in while you are already on the phone, with a customer, or simply unable to reach your phone in time. Instead of those callers hitting a busy signal or voicemail, they reach an answering service that speaks for your business. With AllDayDesk, you keep your existing phone number and forward calls to the service. The receptionist answers using the business information you saved, can book new appointments on your dashboard calendar, and takes messages when it doesn't know an answer or price. Every call, transcript, summary and booking shows up in your dashboard. This page focuses on overflow coverage — handling calls during busy periods — rather than forwarding every call all the time, and it explains how to set up forwarding with common phone providers.

How it works
Choose your business or enter its website. Check the services, hours, and details callers need.
Listen to a sample for your business and check its answers. The sample does not create a real booking.
Follow the steps for your phone service. Set up booking availability and any call transfers you want to use.
Review calls, messages, and bookings in your dashboard.
Overflow answering is about the calls that slip through during normal business hours. You might be mid-job, on another line, or driving. When a caller gets a busy tone or rings out, that caller has to decide whether to wait, leave a voicemail, or try someone else. Overflow coverage gives those callers a real answer instead.
It is different from full-time answering, where every incoming call goes to the service. With overflow, you still answer your own phone when you can. The service only steps in for the calls you miss or can't take. That keeps your personal touch on the calls you handle while the busy-period gaps get covered.
AllDayDesk answers around the clock using your saved business details, so overflow calls get the same treatment no matter when they arrive. The receptionist answers questions from your saved information, books new appointments once you have set up your services and availability, and takes a message whenever it doesn't know an answer, a price, or an open slot.
How you route overflow calls depends on your phone service. Most providers support one or both of these approaches:
Unconditional (all-call) forwarding sends every incoming call straight to the destination number. This is simple, but it means you never hear your own phone ring — it works more like full-time answering than overflow.
Conditional forwarding sends calls only in specific situations: when your line is busy, when you don't answer after a set number of rings, or when your phone is unreachable. This matches the overflow use case, because you keep answering when you're free and the service catches the rest.
Check which features your plan includes before choosing. Some carriers offer conditional forwarding only on certain plans or devices, and setup steps differ by product even within the same company.

The steps below come from each provider's own documentation. Always confirm your exact service name first — a carrier's wireless product, business landline, and hosted voice platform often use different codes or portals.
Verizon mobile: dial *72 plus the 10-digit destination to forward all calls; *71 plus the destination forwards unanswered calls; *73 disables. Set this up from the phone itself while in Verizon coverage. Verizon business landline uses *72 to activate and *73 to deactivate from the same line.
T-Mobile: dial **21*1 followed by the destination and # for all calls, **67*1 for busy, **61*1 for no reply, and **62*1 for unreachable. Disable with the matching ## code (for example ##67#), or ##004# to reset to defaults.
AT&T Phone for Business: dial *72, the destination, then # for all calls; *92 for no-answer; *90 for busy. Turn each off with *73#, *93#, and *91#. AT&T Collaborate uses different codes (*72/*73 always, *62/*63 busy, *92/*93 no-answer), so identify your product before dialing.

Setup starts by choosing your business or entering its website so AllDayDesk can pull in your details. You then check that the information is accurate, hear a personalized sample of how your receptionist will sound, and choose your phone setup. The sample is a preview only — it doesn't create a real booking.
Once your services and availability are configured in the dashboard, new appointments made by the receptionist go on the built-in AllDayDesk calendar by default. If you prefer, you can optionally connect Google Calendar in Settings after connecting and authorizing your Google account.
After forwarding is active, you can review every call in the dashboard: the transcript, a summary, any message taken, and any booking made. When a caller asks something the receptionist doesn't know — a price, a policy, or whether a slot is open — it takes a message so you can follow up yourself.
For transfers, you configure a destination number and the rules for when transfers happen. Neither that the caller is picked up nor that you respond immediately is guaranteed, so treat transfers as one tool among several rather than a promise.
Before turning on forwarding, decide what you want the service to handle. How often do you actually miss calls? If it's a handful a week while you're on a job, conditional no-answer forwarding is usually enough. If your line is constantly tied up, busy forwarding matters more.
Do you want the service to book appointments or just take messages? Booking requires you to set up your services and availability first. Messages are simpler and give you full control over scheduling. For existing appointments, AllDayDesk passes change requests to you rather than confirming them, so you stay in charge of your schedule.
Costs vary by plan and by how many minutes of call time you use, so compare included minutes and overage rates against your typical call volume. Human answering services price differently — some charge per call or start at higher monthly rates — so it's worth comparing what each option includes before deciding.

Yes. Conditional forwarding — busy or no-answer — sends only the calls you can't take, while you keep answering the rest yourself. All-call forwarding is available too if you ever want full coverage.
It takes a message instead of guessing. Prices, policies, and anything not in your saved business information get collected so you can follow up directly.

Instructions depend on your phone service, so check with your provider for the exact forwarding steps for your plan. AllDayDesk works with the calls your provider forwards to it; it doesn't require a particular carrier.
No. Transfers require you to configure a destination number and rules, and neither pickup nor an immediate response is guaranteed. Keep that in mind when deciding which callers should be transferred and which should simply leave a message.
